Abstract
There is disclosed herein a system for providing control of multiple functions needed to perform eye surgery. A microprocessor based system controls a pneumatic system for driving pneumatic scissors in either a variable frequency, multicut mode or a proportional cut mode where the cutting pressure is proportional to the position of a foot operated position sensor.

5328481 - Method for injecting viscous fluid into the eye to lift retinal membrane - Owned by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. (Fort Worth, TX) [*] Notice:The portion of the term of this patent subsequent to June 9, 2009 has been disclaimed.

A method for injecting viscous material into the eye. In the injection into the eye, sufficient material is injected to separate a membrane from the retina so that intraocular scissors may be manipulated between the membrane and the retina to cut the attachment points. The membrane is then aspirated away. The injection is done using a standard glue injector with a one-shot and a continuous mode. The glue injector is pneumatically coupled through a sterile filter and a custom adaptor to a sterile syringe storing the material to be injected.

5622164 - Air flow recorder, generator and analysis system for inhalation device testing and modeling - Owned by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (St. Paul, MN)

An air flow device for use in recording, analyzing, replicating, and generating breathing patterns. A piping structure provides receipt and transfer of pressurized gas through the device. The piping structure has a source connection for receiving a single constant source of pressurized gas. Aspirators are connected to the piping structure for receiving pressurized gas from the source connection and for selectively creating an output pressurization comprising a positive pressure gas flow and a negative pressure gas flow at a proportional solenoid valve. A balancing valve is connected to the piping structure for controlling and calibrating the output pressurization of the aspirators. A control system provides control of the aspirators, the balancing valve, and a solenoid valve. A solenoid valve is mechanically connected to the piping structure with pneumatic input and output connections and electronically connected to the control system with data input and output connections. The solenoid valve provides patterned pneumatic flow between the aspirators and a system model according to air flow commands received by the solenoid from the control system. The system model, in one embodiment, is a breath actuated inhaler device.

A method for injecting viscous material into the eye. In the injection into the eye, sufficient material is injected to separate a membrane from the retina so that intraocular scissors may be manipulated between the membrane and the retina to cut the attachment points. The glue injector is pneumatically coupled through a sterile filter and a custom adaptor to a sterile syringe storing the material to be injected.

5066276 - Method and apparatus for injecting viscous fluid into the eye to lift pre-retinal and post-retinal membrane with linear pressure control - Owned by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. (Fort Worth, TX)

An apparatus and method for injecting viscous material into the body. In the case of injection into the eye, sufficient material is injected to separate a membrane from the retina so that intraocular scissors may be manipulated between the membrane and the retina to cut the attachment points. The membrane is then aspirated away. The injection is done using a standard glue injector with a one-shot and a continuous mode. The glue injector is pneumatically coupled through a sterile filter and a custom adaptor to a sterile syringe storing the material to be injected.

5157603 - Control system for ophthalmic surgical instruments - Owned by Storz Instrument Company (St. Louis, MO) [*] Notice:The portion of the term of this patent subsequent to June 12, 2007 has been disclaimed.

The control system is programmable by the user by inserting a preprogrammed key into the system console. The key changes the default values normally used by the control system to those values selected by a particular surgeon. The control console thus emulates the performance characteristics of a wide variety of different types of microsurgical control systems, leaving the surgeon free to perform the operation without having to adjust to a new or unfamiliar system. The display screen is self-illuminating and provides a plurality of control menus generated by data stored in computer memory circuits. By bank switching the memory circuits, the display can be caused to appear in a wide variety of different languages.
