Disclosed is a coated article, for example an architectural transparency, or a vehicular transparency, or a reflecting article, as a decorative article. The article has a substrate, e.g., a substantially transparent substrate. The substrate has an optical coating on a surface thereof. The coating is a bilayer dielectric thin film having a thickness corresponding to a constructively interfering function of a wavelength of interest. The bilayer thin film is a metallic layer, which serves as an adhesion layer, with a dielectric atop the metallic layer which is a compound of the metal forming the metallic layer.
Glass composites, containing a glass substrate (1) on which is deposited an underlying film (2) based on tantalum oxide, titanium oxide or tin oxide, on which is deposited a functional film (3) based on an alloy of chromium and nickel or based on tantalum, on which is deposited an overlying film (4) based on titanium oxide, titanium nitride or tantalum oxide, provide effective protection against solar radiation while exhibiting excellent wear and corrosion resistance.
A mirror comprises a first layer being of a transparency, a second layer mounted on the first layer and being in the form of a translucent metal thin film with a thickness of less than 350.ANG., a third layer mounted on the second layer and being in the form of a transparent oxide or fluoride of a metal and a fourth layer mounted on the third layer and being in the form of a thin metal to be used as a reflecting member.
An optical thin film for an optical element is disclosed, which includes at least one layer containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of MoO.sub.3 and WO.sub.3. A material for use in evaporation coating to prepare a thin film includes a mixture of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of MoO.sub.3 and WO.sub.3 and another dielectric. A further optical thin film includes a substrate and superimposed thereon are alternate layers. One such alternative layer having a high refractive index, and composed of a material containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of MoO.sub.3 and WO.sub.3. Another of such alternative layers having a low refractive index, and composed of SiO.sub.2. Another thin film includes a substrate and, superimposed thereon, at least one dielectric layer. The at least one dielectric layer being at least one layer containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of MoO.sub.3 and WO.sub.3, formed by vacuum evaporation coating.
A aircrew controllable sunlight filter for preventing sunlight washout of aircraft instruments comprises as part of an otherwise conventional laminated aircraft transparency an additional ply or layer of photosensitive material positioned near the inside of the transparency. An ultraviolet light source aimed by an aircrew member at a part area of the transparency will cause the transparency to darken and reduce the amount of visible sunlight striking the aircraft instruments.
