An acoustical barrier usable for sound deadening and vibration dampening in vehicles which includes a base layer of a flexible foam secured at the outer surface to an insulation layer of polyurethane elastomer molded to the shape of the area to be insulated such as an automobile fire wall area. The inner surface of the base layer will preferably be in contact with the area to be insulated. The polyurethane elastomer of the insulation layer will preferably include a natural mineral filler impregnated therein. The insulating layer provides the rigid form for holding of the flexible foam, which itself provides a stand-off to hold the insulating layer in spaced relation with respect to the vibrating surface. The polyurethane elastomer can vary in thickness in proportion to the level of acoustical activity of the area to be insulated.
A fabric-less part and a method of making same are disclosed. The fabric-less part may include a flexible polyurethane foam body, a high-density polyurethane foam backing layer bonded to the foam body, and a polyurethane elastomer skin bonded to the backing layer. Alternatively, the backing layer may be eliminated and the polyurethane elastomer skin is directly bonded to the flexible polyurethane foam body. The fabric-less part may be an automotive interior part such as a pillar trim, headrest, trim panel, instrument panel, door panel, armrest, or part of an automotive seat such as a seat cushion.
A sound-absorption material for an automobile includes a damping material, a sound-absorption material and a surface material. The damping, sound-absorption and surface materials are integrated together. The damping material includes a moldable plastic constraining material and an adhesive damping sheet containing a petroleum resin. The sound-proof material is integrally attachable to an automotive sheet material such as a dashboard.
An air-borne sound insulating arrangement with absorption properties for surface elements, in particular for partition walls in motor vehicles, comprises a heavy layer which has foam layers on both sides which have skins on the outside or have a foil as a covering. The arrangement is arranged so close to the surface element (sheet 1) to be protected that the distance between the heavy layer and the surface element is as small as possible. Adhesion to the surface element does not take place. The arrangement can rest against the surface element or can be at a short distance therefrom so as to even out corrugations or the like. The arrangement is arranged in the desired position in relation to the surface element by means of fastening bolts and/or fastenings at the edges.
A mounting arrangement for accepting a pipe through a boundary in a vehicle includes a dash defining a boundary between an engine compartment and a passenger compartment. A dash mat is disposed adjacent to the dash. A pipe extends through the dash between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment. A first mounting plate is positioned in the passenger compartment and accepts the pipe through a passage therein. A noise abating material is disposed between the dash and the mounting plate. The noise abating material contacts an outer circumferential surface of the pipe and overlaps a portion of the dash mat in an assembled position.
The larger of the two flanges in a grommet contains a tip portion that extends back toward the other tapered flange and overlies the circumferential slot between the two flanges to define a grommet having application to panels of a variety of thicknesses. The tip portion elastically bends, upon installing the grommet in a panel, responsive to force exerted by a side wall of the panel. It exerts an elastic reaction force pressing on a side of the panel. Concurrently it pulls the other tapered flange into contact with the opposed surface of the panel through elastic force exerted through the grommets midsection. This seals the flanges against the panel's sides, notwithstanding a circumferential slot width greater than the panel's thickness and notwithstanding a panel mounting hole having a greater diameter than the bottom surface of that slot. A fire resistant layer is integrally formed or applied in that outer surface of the grommet containing the larger flange.
