Abstract
An optical switch for use as a modular keyboard switch designed to provide tactile and audible feedback to the keyboard operator. The switch includes an opaque housing in which a light emitting device and a light activated detector are mounted. A "U" shaped spring shutter rests within the housing between the emitter and detector and has an aperture through which light from the emitter may illuminate the detector. A spring loaded key stem moves longitudinally within the housing and is designed to penetrate the open end of the shutter. The key stem and shutter are shaped such that as the key stem is depressed the upwardly extending arms of the shutter are at first forced outward by projecting shoulders on the key stem and then snap back along upwardly sloping surfaces of the shoulder, thereby causing the shutter to spring upwards and block the optical path between the emitter and detector. The snap action of the shutter causes an audible "click" and also provides tactile feedback to the operator.

7105763 - Switch assembly - Owned by Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. (Coopersburg, PA)

A switch assembly includes an actuator assembly having a slidably supported pushbutton and a switch mechanism switchable between alternate positions. The pushbutton is biased by a return spring between the pushbutton and a retainer. A pin is received within the return spring coils and engages a pivot member through an elongated opening in the retainer that allows lateral pin movement. A switch plate moves between alternate positions by contact with the pivot member and is maintained in one of the positions by a contact spring between the pivot member and plate. A spring damper in the contact spring coils limits resonating vibration. The switch assembly provides a multiple segment force input profile having first and second segments leading to the switching force with slopes according to a preferred ratio. Third and fourth segments of the input profile following the switching force define a V-shape.

5965878 - Performing quadrature and push button function utilizing two IR emitter/detector pairs - Owned by Rockwell Science Center, Inc. (Thousand Oaks, CA)

A selector assembly for use in avionic multifunctional displays to perform quadrature and push button functions is described herein. The selector assembly utilizes two sensors and a cylindrical band with an encoder pattern having three distinct zones to sense either direction of rotation (quadrature) of a knob or its push motion. The pattern can include regions that are absorptive and reflective to infrared (IR) energy. The selector assembly uses the two sensors to sense a pattern rotation or a push motion of the pattern, thereby reducing the number of mechanical and sensing components and simplifying the wiring associated with the assembly. The encoder pattern is molded either directly on the inside of the knob or on a label that is adhered to the interior surface of the knob. The physical components and the sensors of the encoder mechanism are also placed within the knob of the selector assembly, thereby optimizing the useable glass surface area available for avionic displays.

5668358 - Reconfigurable keyboard - Owned by Ultimate Rechnology Corporation (Victor, NY)

A reconfigurable keyboard includes at least two key switches which each has a plunger housing projecting from a top surface thereof, and a multi-switch key cap engageable with the key switch and having at least one dimension that is sufficient to span the at least two key switches. The key cap includes one active switch post to which a plunger is attached, the plunger being reciprocally movable in the plunger housing of one key switch for actuating the key switch when the key cap is depressed, and at least one passive switch post which is also reciprocally movable in the plunger housing of another key switch without actuating the switch when the key cap is depressed. The key cap is selectively positionable anywhere on the keyboard in either a horizontal or a vertical direction. Each key switch further includes four openings each of which are located in a corner of the top surface of the key switch. The openings are symmetric with respect to a diagonal line intersecting opposite corners of the key switch surface and accommodate the selective vertical or horizontal engagement of a clip in two key switch surfaces for retaining a key leveling torsion bar connected to the multi-switch key cap, corresponding to the selective orientation of the key cap on the keyboard.

5763970 - Encoder system with cover mounted encoder - Owned by Lexmark International, Inc. (Lexington, KY)

Sensor (41) is held between its arms (63) and nubs 60 in cover (31). A circuit board (57) on which the sensor is mounted remains outside of the cover, and panels (55) of the sensor (41) extend upward to prevent the circuit board (57) from collapsing leads (45, 53) which connect the sensor to the circuit board. Reliable operation is obtained without narrow tolerances.
