Cleansing apparatus comprising a pair of rotating cylinders with spray nozzles in the walls thereof. The cylinders provide cylindrical cleansing chambers which have their axes displaced from each other at an angle of approximately 30 degrees to comfortably receive the hands and forearms of a user. Certain of the nozzles in each cylinder are disposed in a helical array to sweep the forearm of the user with cleansing fluid as the cylinder is rotated. Each cylinder preferably has an inner liner and an outer liner with space there between providing a passageway for cleansing fluid to the nozzles which are preferably formed in the inner liner. An elastomeric support for each cylinder is provided. A blower may be associated with the cylinders for drawing air into the cylinders to reduce external splashing of cleansing fluid.
A self-monitoring hand-sanitizing station having a basin capable of holding an antiseptic solution to be situated near the entrance to a food handling area. A first proximity detector determines when an individual is approaching both the basin and the entrance. The basin contains a first moisture-proof switch and a second moisture-proof switch the activation of which switches must be done simultaneously; these switches are so situated that a user cannot accomplish such simultaneous activation with a single hand. A second proximity detector determines when an individual has passed beyond the basin toward the entrance. And a logic unit receives electrical inputs from the first proximity detector, the second proximity detector, the first moisture-proof switch, and the second moisture-proof switch to determine when an individual has approached both the basin and the entrance but passed beyond the basin toward the entrance without having simultaneously activated the first moisture-proof switch and the second moisture-proof switch. When such a determination is made, an output signal is generated by the logic unit, which output signal activates an alarm.
A hand washing apparatus and having a hand washing bowl mounted at a suitable height for washing the hands, the bowl being moveable between open and closed positions, controls for moving the bowl between a hand washing position and an inactive position, a dispenser for dispensing warm water over the hands in the bowl, a dispenser for dispensing soap over the hands in the bowl, and, a dispenser for dispensing rinse water over the hands in the bowl. Also disclosed is a method of cleansing the hands using such apparatus.

For sterilizing and air-drying the user's hands, a sterilizing hand dryer comprising an antiseptic solution spraying system for discharging antiseptic solution through a nozzle to sterilize the body limb inserted in a sterilizing chamber and detected by an electric eye, a hot air blower means for discharging hot air in said sterilizing chamber for drying said body limb, a control circuit for stopping the sterilizing hand dryer 3 seconds after removal of said body limb from said sterilizing air bath camber.
