A novel donor construction is used for thermal mass transfer imaging applications. The donor constructions are coated from pigment dispersions which are flushed in solutions containing a chlorinated wax. Because of near refractive index matching to the coloring pigments and the low cohesive strength of the chlorinated wax, this novel thermal mass transfer system is characterized by low transfer energy requirements and high transparency in the transferred images.
A thermosensitive image transfer recording medium is disclosed, which comprises a support and a thermofusible ink layer formed thereon, comprising a thermofusible material, a coloring agent, and a filler, with the difference between the refractive index of the filler and the refractive index of the thermofusible material being 0.15 or less.
An imagable copy film comprises a film substrate of a thermoplastics polymeric material with a percentage thermal expansion in the film widthwise direction (TD) at 150.degree. C. of 0.01 to 1.0%, and a percentage thermal shrinkage in the film lengthwise direction (MD) at 150.degree. C. of 0.4 to 2.0%. The substrate has a receiving layer on at least one surface thereof, comprising an acrylic and/or methacrylic resin.
A thermal fusion type donor film composed of a substratal film and a donor layer superposed on the substratal film, the donor layer comprising a terpolymer produced by polymerization of a reacting composition of 25 to 45% by weight of acrylonitrile, 35 to 55% by weight of n-butyl acrylate, and 10 to 30% by weight of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (these percentages being based on the total amount of monomers) and a coloring material. The donor film of this invention exhibit an ideal adhesiveness to a substrate of the form of a layer during the manufacture thereof, attains an efficient transfer to an image-receiving layer during the formation of an image, and imparts a gradation to the produced image, and further, is capable of bilevel printing. After the formation of the image is completed, it exhibits very low adhesiveness to other surfaces at normal room temperature.
A new wax composition for use in the ink industry, which composition is prepared from: (a) 40% to 90% of solvent having a boiling point within the range of about 100.degree. to 550.degree. C., said solvent being selected from the group consisting of aromatic and aliphatic solvents, (b) 10% to 40% of wax having an average particle size within the range of about 1 to about 300 microns, (c) 5% to 40% of polymeric pour point depressant, and optionally dependant on the characteristics required, 4% to 40% of a resin material which is soluble in aromatic and aliphatic solvents.
The invention provides a thermal transfer element having an infrared sensitive adhesive topcoat and process for using the transfer element to generate a colored image on a receptor. The infrared sensitive adhesive topcoat allows for a more efficient transfer of the image to a receptor. The color transfer layer and/or infrared sensitive adhesive topcoat may optionally contain crosslinkable or polymerizable materials that allows one to crosslink the image after transfer to the receptor to produce a more durable image.
