A tool for generating a prescription surface in a plastic eyeglass lens. A pair of replaceable, cutting elements are mounted on a tool having a spindle. Each cutting element has a solid polycrystalline diamond material forming a cutting edge for progressively shaving a surface on the backside of the lens as the tool is swing back and forth. The surface so generated need only be polished, without the conventional abrasive finishing steps.
A novel construction of a single blade fly cutter type generator wheel. The wheel incorporates a single polycrystalline blade. The blade is counterbalanced by a cut-out portion. An abrasive grit material is provided on a surface of the wheel rim which follows the polycrystalline blade. The abrasive grit cooperates with the blade such that it breaks down large turnings generated by the blade during cutting operations to increase efficiency of the wheel and allows the use of only one blade. An improved method for drilling or cutting of composites is provided wherein softer layers of the composites are not adversely affected during the cutting or drilling operation.
A fly cutter type ring generator wheel with a novel abrasive grip configuration. The grip configuration requires the largest size grit material to be used on the outer circumferential side of the circumferential axially extending cutting edge. The smallest size grit material is attached to the radiused edge, with a mid sized grit material attached to the inner circumferential surface. The grit configuration gives an improved finish on the lens and reduces the propensity for lens chipping.
A method for chamfering the cam plate of a swash plate compressor comprising a cylinder block provided with cylinder bores, pistons inserted into the cylinder bores to be slidable, a driving shaft, a cam plate slantedly fixed to the driving shaft and shoes inserted between the cam plate and pistons, wherein the circumferential surface of the cam plate forms a cylindrical surface extending coaxially with the driving shaft, comprises the steps of rotating the cam plate around an axis inclined relative to the driving shaft, disposing the blade of a cutting tool to extend parallel to the axis, and abutting the blade of the cutting tool against edges of the circumferential surface of the cam plate.

A method for preparing a contact surface of an implantable bone, joint or similar prosthetic component subject to contact or motion includes the steps of mounting the prosthetic component on a turning or cutting machine and cutting the face of the prosthetic component with a diamond cutting tool using computerized control of tool position along a cross direction to machine cut a super finished surface. The variations of contour and the surface roughness are both under about 0.5 micrometers, and preferably under about 0.2 micrometers or less. The super finished surface generates wear particles at an asymptotically low or residual level during wear-in which may enhance wear characteristics and reduce local reaction or systemic rejection effects. The component is preferably formed by a strong hard polymer, such as UHMWPE.
