Abstract
A laminated panel for use in the construction of vehicles bodies or buildings comprises a pair of substantially rigid outer layers (1,2), separated by a core (3) of foamed plastics material. The core includes a plurality of spaced elongate inserts (4) of hard plastics material such as ABS. The inserts act as anchor points for attachment of lashing rails or the like externally of one of said outer layers (1,2).

5065265 - Automatic data storage cartridge library with a storage carrousel having rotatable sub-carrousels

A storage library with a simplified operating mechanism for computer back-up data cartridges. The cartridge is placed in a tray in an opening in a sealed storage chamber and transported into and removed from a multi-tier storage carrousel by a robotic arm. When a tape is to be retrieved, the arm moves the stored cartridge either to a module or directly to the window tray. A simple transmission operating the carrousel permits any cartridge to be moved to the storage-retrieval station in no more than two revolutions of the multi-carrousel central drive shaft. The use of a carrousel reduces the distance the arm must travel and decreases the time for storage or retrieval of a cartridge. Only two of seven axes have incremental positioning controls: the vertical lift and the carrousel rotation. All other axes have fixed travel distances. A cartridge gripper is compliant, readily adaptable to different cartridge configurations, and materially reduces the need for precision positioning.

7066532 - Ultrathin structural panel with rigid insert - Owned by Lear Corporation (Southfield, MI)

An ultrathin covered structural panel includes a panel body made from a relatively lightweight moldable material such as expanded polypropylene (EPP), expanded polystyrene (EPS), expanded polypropylene with added strengtheners (XPP), polystyrene/polyphenylene ether (GECET.RTM.) foam, polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam, fiberglass materials, glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (Azdel.RTM. composites), or treated reclaimed cellulose. The structural panel also includes one or more rigid high-strength structural inserts in the interior of the panel body. The structural panel further includes a covering on at least one side of the panel body. The structural panel is not more than about 20 mm thick. In a method of making the structural panel, one or more rigid high-strength structural inserts are placed into the cavity of a mold. The mold cavity has the shape of the structural panel and has a thickness of not more than about 20 mm. The mold is closed. A relatively lightweight moldable material is introduced into the mold cavity so that the moldable material surrounds the insert(s) and fills the mold cavity. The moldable material is allowed to harden to form the structural panel, and the finished structural panel is removed from the mold.
