In an information registering and retrieving apparatus, primary information of image signals converted from an original document or documents is registered by adding secondary information to the primary information and any desired primary information is retrieved by utilizing the secondary information. The apparatus is provided with a first output reservation device for storing, in a storage device, desired secondary information designated in the entire secondary information retrieved on the basis of any given retrieval condition and for interrupting an output of the desired primary information corresponding to the designated secondary information on a display and by a printer. It is further provided with a second output reservation device for storing, in the storage device, desired primary information designated in the entire primary information corresponding to the retrieved secondary information and for interrupting an output of the desired primary information by the printer. In this apparatus, upon completion of retrieval processing, the primary information which has not been outputted yet is outputted on the basis of the information stored in the storage device.

A response generation means generates the response to the information demander in accordance with the plan formed by the response plan formation means.

An apparatus for determining the status of files stored, e.g., on the disk drive of a computer compares the name of a file to be inventoried (the "member" or "suspect" file) against a list of names of component files belonging to certain known file sets. If the member file's name compares favorably with one or more names of the component files the apparatus runs tests on the member file. These include comparing data stored in the member file with data patterns of the matching component files. The apparatus determines the confidence factor of the association between the member file and the matching component file based, at least in part, on the test results. Depending on the level of the confidence factor, it generates an output signal including the name of member file and the name of the set of the matching component file.
A data retrieval system capable of carrying out the retrieval using the secondary information of the primary data to be retrieved such as environmental information or structural information as the retrieval key. In the system, the primary data which are filing target to be stored and retrieved are stored in a first memory while secondary information associated with the primary data, which are not directly related with data content of the primary data, are stored in a second memory in correspondence to the primary data stored in the first memory. Then, when a retrieval key specifying a desired retrieval of the primary data from the first memory is entered, the secondary information is selected from the second memory in accordance with the retrieval key, and the primary data corresponding to the secondary information selected in accordance with the retrieval key is retrieved and outputted as a retrieval result.
