A carpet sweeper, vacuum cleaner or other upright floor cleaning device includes a base unit (2) and a handle (6) freely pivoted on the base unit for translation over a floor (3). The handle pivots in a vertical plane (9) extending transverse to the base unit support wheel axles (5). A handle grip (10) includes a first grip portion (12) which is coaxial with the handle and forms an extension thereof. The outer end of the first grip portion connects with a second grip portion (14) which comprises an arm (15) graspable by the operator, with the arm extending forwardly (upwardly when in use) of the handle. The arm is disposed in the vertical plane (9) and is bowed or curved from its point of anchorage with the first grip portion (12) to its opposite end, which is disposed in a plane (19) transverse to the first grip portion and passing between the latter's ends. The curvature of the outer arm surface is adapted to nest in a cup formed by the operator's closed hand. The said opposite end of the arm merges into a third grip portion which forms a brace (20) extending diagonally rearwardly (downwardly when in use) back to and connecting with the first grip portion. Instead of the operator's fingers being arrayed along the handle at an acute angle to a horizontal plane containing the wheel axles (5), as in prior upright cleaning devices, the fingers are arrayed normal to the pivotable handle and at an obtuse angle to the axles, thus creating a stronger wrist position. Also, since the handle is effectively below the grip during use, the handle itself is pivotally positioned at a smaller angle to the floor than previously.
A hook assembly for a vacuum cleaner handle which has a base member formed in the handle with a continuously internally walled extension defining an opening into which a continuously externally walled extension of a hook member can be inserted so that portions of the externally walled extension engage portions of the internally walled extension so that loads applied to the hook are transmitted to the handle through those surfaces. A spring normally biases the surfaces together, but can be manually overcome to rotate the hook for easy removal of the cord. A double hook arrangement is also provided to support a vacuum hose and an electrical cord with similar interengaging surfaces to transmit the load.
An improvement in a wand attachment for a carpet cleaning apparatus. These wand attachments generally consist of a shaft having a first end and a second end. A suction conduit is provided having a first end and a second end. The first end is disposed at the first end of the shaft such that a suction force is applied to a carpet. The second end is adapted for coupling to a suction motor of a carpet cleaning apparatus. The improvement consists of an articulated shaft having three sections pivotally connected. One of the pivotal connections is adjacent the first end of the shaft.
An upright vacuum cleaner having a handle pivotally connected to a rear portion of a surface cleaning brush housing. A lower portion of the handle is relatively straight and an upper portion of the handle curves forwardly therefrom so that the cleaner may be operated with greater ease and the housing may be operated under articles of furniture without undue stooping by the user. With the handle in an upright position, the cleaner occupies a smaller floor area as compared to conventional cleaners.
An adjustable vacuum handle construction 10 including a collar member 20 dimensioned to fit over and be secured to the rearwardly angled generally straight tubular hand grip portion 102 of a conventional vacuum handle 101. A handle member 30 is pivotally secured to the collar member 20 and provided with a locking unit 13 for fixedly securing the handle member 30 to the collar member 20 at a desired angular orientation.
A vacuum cleaning appliance operated by an electric motor and having a telescopic handle with a hand grip. For greater ease of use, the hand grip is detachable and capable of being attached between a telescopic middle piece and an anchoring point on the handle to the appliance.
