Abstract
A bed sheet 10 is comprised of a first panel 14 with at least one corner defined by a first highly stretchable insert 34 and a pocket defined by a second highly stretchable insert 50 in cooperation with the first highly stretchable insert 34. The fitted bed sheet 10 is capable of fitting the form of a conventional innerspring mattress and also a waterbed mattress for any given mattress size classification.

A fitted cornerless bedclothing item such as a sheet, mattress pad, anti-allergy cover, blanket or coverlet includes a top portion, side portions and end portions, and elastic segments stitched to edges of respective side and end portions. One or more elastic bindings are provided at lower edges of the side and end portions to cause the tops of the elastic segments to be positioned below the respective upper corners of the mattress on which the bedclothing item is mounted, such that no ears or pockets are formed when the bedclothing item is mounted on mattresses of at least two different sizes and/or thicknesses. The elastic segments are made of knitted or woven elastic filaments, such as SPANDEX.RTM. fabric, and can be shaped to have a straight lower edge and a curved upper edge, the curved upper edge advantageously approximating an end of an ellipse.

A reversible bedcovering assembly, including a main bedcovering having an inward section surrounded by an edge section and at least two side portions attached to the edge section and depending therefrom when installed on a mattress or bed. Each side portion is adjacent at least one other side portion and forms a void therebetween. A gusset insert is provided to substantially fill the void between adjacent side portions, each gusset insert having a top portion and a drape portion attached thereto. Each gusset insert is attached to the main bedcovering adjacent the edge section.

A combination top and bottom sheet construction. The bottom sheet is comprised of a main section, a pair of side sections, and a foot section. A top sheet includes a main section and a foot end terminal edge. In order to secure the top sheet to the bottom sheet, a pinch stitch is formed transversely across an intermediate portion of the bottom sheet. In particular, a double run formed from the bottom sheet is gathered and the foot end terminal edge of the top sheet is inserted within the double run and the composite double run and foot end terminal end are stitched to form the pinch stitch. An elastic seam is connected about the perimeter of the bottom sheet so as to make the bottom sheet a fitted sheet. Disposed within the lower corner areas of the fitted bottom sheet is a series of bottom panels that are designed to extend diagonally across the lower corner areas of an underlying support structure such as a mattresses.

Further at least one triangular portion includes an opening configured to accommodate a hose connection to a mattress.
