Abstract
A hypodermic syringe incorporating a post-injection safety sheath for enclosing the sharpened needle tip. The hypodermic syringe incorporates parallel main and sheath chambers, the main chamber being to store fluid being injected or withdrawn, the parallel sheath chamber positioning the protective sheath. An axially aligned slot is disposed in the wall of the protective needle sheath and is aligned in communication with the ingress of the arcuate needle. A helical compression spring is coaxially aligned within the sheath chamber against the needle sheath biasing the sheath to enclosure the needle tip. When compressed, the needle sheath is withdrawn from the needle tip held in place through a detachable tab extending through the chamber wall.

6716199 - Safety syringe system

A system for converting an off-the-shelf syringe into a safety syringe for preventing accidental needle stick or infection. The preferred embodiment of the present invention is configured to mount to an off-the-shelf syringe via threaded, snap, permanent, or other engagement to the cannula hub of the syringe, wherein the device may include the needle for mounting to the syringe, or via barrel rings configured to mount about the barrel of the syringe. The device is configured to convert the syringe into a safety syringe including a protective cover in longitudinal communication with the syringe needle, the protective cover configured to longitudinally envelope the base of the needle in a storage position, and engage and cap the needle tip in a protected configuration after the instrument has been utilized.

5312372 - Safety syringe system

A safety system for use in conjunction with an instrument having a needle, wherein there is included a spring biased, locking pushbutton or activation tab apparatus which communicates with a locking safety sheath situated at the base of the hypodermic needle prior to activation. The safety sheath is in sliding, longitudinal communication about the needle, and is activated to its sheathing position by pressing a pushbutton or activation tab on the locking pushbutton or activation tab apparatus, directing the sheath from about the base of the needle to over the tip of the needle. Upon communication with the tip, the safety sheath deploys a locking hatch, preventing the urging of the sheath back to the base, and rendering the needle unreuseable. The present invention operates independently of the syringe plunger when utilized in conjunction with a syringe, allowing the drawing and injection of fluids without interference, and is sheathed in locking position upon urging of the pushbutton or activation tab, "clicking" the sheath into a locked position.

5498245 - Attachment for a parenteral device - Owned by Eastland Technology Australia PTY LTD (Mount Lawley,AU)

An attachment to a parenteral device (11) where the parenteral device (11) comprises a body (12) having a duct (15) which is convey a parenteral fluid, the attachment comprising a housing (20) adapted to be removably engageable with the body (12) and to be rigidly supported by the body when in engagement therewith, the housing (20) having a flow path (22, 23) which communicates with the duct (15) on engagement of the housing with the body; a hollow needle body (26) slidably supported within the housing (20) and comprising a hollow needle having a free end; the needle body (26) is slidably received within the housing (20) for movement between a first position at which the free end is received within the housing and a second position at which the free end extends from the housing, and the needle body is movable from the second position to the first position; a retaining means (27, 32, 33) provided to retain the needle body (26) in the first or second position; the needle having a first aperture (28) provided at or adjacent the free end, and a second aperture (29) provided in the needle body (26) spaced from the free end, the second aperture (29) bring in communication with the flow path (22, 23) when the needle body is in the second position.

6530905 - Self-sheathing dental needle - Owned by HBA Medical Group, Inc. (Las Vegas, NV)

A self-sheathing dental needle includes a finger grip slideably mounted to a syringe body and a plunger to expel a fluid medicament from the syringe body. The finger grip is formed with a tang that is positioned near the distal end of the syringe body when the finger grip is fully advanced in the distal direction. A needle cartridge is provided having a needle mounted in a needle holder, a sheath slideably mounted to the needle holder, and a lock body for locking the sheath in position over the distal end of the needle. When the cartridge is attached to the syringe body and aligned, the lock body can be reconfigured to release the sheath for movement relative to the needle. Specifically, the finger grip can be translated to cause the tang to engage the lock body, release the sheath, and expose the distal end of the needle.

5273540 - Nonreusable needle and catheter assembly - Owned by Luther Medical Products (Tustin, CA)

A needle-safe flashback chamber for vascular/venous access devices wherein the needle cannula is automatically captured within a protective sheath upon being withdrawn from the patient to prevent accidental exposure of administering personnel to substantial health risk, such as that associated with the AIDS virus, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases is comprised of a needle cannula; a substantially transparent reservoir in fluid communication with the needle cannula; a vent formed in the cavity; and a substantially transparent sheath, sized and configured to slidably receive the needle cannula and cavity. The transparent reservoir can be partially withdrawn from the sheath, simultaneously withdrawing the needle cannula into the sheath. The needle cannula is attached to the cavity at an angled offset from the longitudinal axis of the cavity such that when the reservoir is withdrawn a sufficient distance from the sheath, the tip of the needle cannula will become axially misaligned with the needle cannula aperture formed therein, thereby preventing reextension of the needle cannula.
