Abstract
The present invention relates to a novel monolithic read/write recording head for use in disk drives. The airborne slider body and the transducer nose portion of the head is made from the same magnetic ferrite material. The magnetic material preferably consists of NiZn ferrite or MnZn ferrite. A narrow track surface has a non-magnetic gap interposed across the track at some distance atop the I-bar coil assembly, between the slider and the transducer portion. For protection, this gap and track area is embedded in molten glass. Another embodiment of the invention provides for a slider body equipped with both a servotype and data recording transducer assembly. The novel design provides attachment on a spring-loaded head holder in such a position that the spring axis is in parallel with the long dimension of the body along its air bearing surface. Alternatively, the head can have mounting blocks arranged such that the spring axis is directed perpendicularly to the long dimension of the body.

5298113 - Method of producing magnetic head core having magnetic gap and narrow track - Owned by NGK Insulators, Ltd. (JP)

A method of producing a magnetic head core having a coil-winding groove around which an annular magnetic path is formed, and a magnetic gap intersecting the magnetic path, and a track having a predetermined track width and extending in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic gap, the magnetic gap and track being formed in a medium-sliding surface of the head core. The method includes the steps of: forming a track precursor in a surface of a core body which gives the medium-sliding surface of the head core, the track precursor having a larger width than a predetermined track width, and extending across the magnetic gap in a longitudinal direction of the core body; and pressing a shearing tool against the track precursor, and applying a force to the shearing tool to thereby remove by shearing at least one of widthwise opposite portions of the track precursor adjacent to the magnetic gap, so as to form the track having a predetermined track width in the vicinity of the magnetic gap.

5331494 - Head core slider for rigid magnetic disk drive - Owned by NGK Insulators, Ltd. (JP)

A head core slider including a slider body having an air bearing, and a head core having a ferrite portion providing a closed magnetic circuit with a magnetic gap is disclosed. The ferrite portion of the head core has a recess formed in at least one of two surface areas thereof which are to face the magentic disk and which are located on opposite sides of the magentic gap.

6017264 - Deflection lapping apparatus and method for hydrodynamic bearing slider - Owned by Seagate Technology, Inc. (Scotts Valley, CA)

A lapping apparatus for controlling curvature of a hydrodynamic bearing slider includes a bar of slider substrate material and a lapping carrier. The bar of slider substrate material includes at least one slider body having a bearing surface, and a back surface, with the back surface having a periphery and a center. The lapping carrier has a support surface which supports the slider back surface at the periphery and has a recess in the support surface adjacent the slider center such that the back surface is unsupported at the slider center. During the lapping process, the center of the slider deflects into the recess in the lapping carrier such that less material is lapped from the bearing surface at the center than at the periphery, which results in a positive curvature change in the bearing surface.

5305166 - Magnetic head slider - Owned by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (Osaka,JP)

A slider body and a yoke each made of a ferromagnetic oxide are butted against each other with a gap spacer provided therebetween. An air bearing portion is formed on the upper surface of the slider body. The yoke has a width t smaller than the width w of the air bearing portion, and is covered over both side faces thereof with glass and bonded to the slider body with the glass.

5233492 - Flying type composite magnetic head having Mn-Zn ferrite core - Owned by Hitachi Metals, Ltd. (Tokyo,JP)

A floating magnetic head comprises a pair of magnetic core pieces which face each other through a gap and a metal magnetic film formed on the surface facing the gap of one of the pair of magnetic core pieces. The pair of magnetic core pieces are made of a single crystal Mn-Zn ferrite, a plane of the magnetic core pieces being formed almost in parallel with the surface forming a main magnetic path, and a <100> direction in the plane being formed to meet a relation of an angle .theta. to be 26.degree.<.theta..ltoreq.45.degree. between the <100> direction and the surface facing the gap.
