Abstract
A tubular guard is provided by this invention which can be telescoped over the barrel of a syringe or other device carrying a needle adapted for injection or removal of fluid of a patient or animal and which can be locked into barrel covering position thereover, means whereby locking engagement of the guard and the barrel may be broken, guide means for guiding the guard into telescoped needle or nozzle surrounding position after use of the syringe, said guard being adapted to be maintained into the nozzle or needle surrounding position and means whereby the guard is preventing from returning to its initial barrel covered position.

5304149 - Medical device with a lockable needle shield - Owned by Becton, Dickinson and Company (Franklin Lakes, NJ)

A medical device includes a barrel with proximal and distal ends. A needle extends from the distal end of the barrel and terminates in a point. A shield is coaxially and rotationally mounted on the barrel. This shield is axially movable between a retracted position in which the needle point is exposed and an extended position in which the needle point is covered. The device includes locking elements associated with the barrel and the shield. These locking elements are responsive to a combined rotational and axially distal movement of the shield, when the shield is at an extended and unlocked position, for locking the shield on the barrel at the extended position. These locking elements prevent subsequent rotational and axial movement of the shield on the barrel.

5324264 - Self-capping syringe

A self-capping syringe is provided, which consists of a barrel having a first end and a second end. A finger flange is on the first end and a needle hub is on the second end of the barrel. A plunger slides within the barrel and extends from the finger flange, while a thumb rest is on an outer end of the plunger. A needle extends axially outward from the needle hub on the second end of the barrel. A protective cap is also provided. A mechanism is for allowing the protective cap to twist upon the barrel from a retracted position that exposes the needle to an extended position which covers the needle. A structure is for locking the protective cap in the extended position after use, so as to prevent an accidental needle stick before disposal.

5423765 - Removable safety needle sheath - Owned by Smiths Industries Medical Systems, Inc. (Keene, NH)

A safety needle device adaptable to fit over a tube holder includes a skirt that fittingly mates to the front end of the tube holder. A housing flexibly attached to the base of the safety device is pivotable to a position in alignment with the needle mated to the device so as to cover the same.

5385557 - Shielding device for a syringe needle

A retractable needle shielding device for use with a medical syringe is devised to reduce the risk of inadvertent needle strikes. The shield includes a retractable tubular body movable from a position completely shielding the needle to a position where the needle extends outward from the tubular body. The tubular body may be configured to retract over the barrel of the syringe and, in which case, should be formed of a substantially transparent material. The shield may include a collar engageable in series with and in fluid communication with the nose of the barrel and the hub of the needle. The collar preferably includes radially extending guides which are engageable with grooves disposed interiorly of the tubular body. The collar may be substantially the same length as the tubular body and, therefore, not retract over the syringe barrel. Frictional elements are provided to resist the displacement of the tubular body relative to the syringe. The tubular body is dimensioned and configured to be extensible over the length of a syringe needle and the needle cap.

5989226 - Syringe with detachable drug housing - Owned by Seldoren Limited (Lancashire,GB)

A syringe has a drug-containing cartridge with a bung at one end which is engaged by a plunger, and a membrane at its other end which is penetrated by a needle. A connecting structure is connected to (or is formed integrally with) the needle and fits onto the forward end of the cartridge and the syringe. After use the cartridge, the connecting structure and the needle can be disposed together. A sleeve is slidably mounted on the structure and can be moved to sheath the needle.
