The method of displaying multitone images beginning with a grayscale original image capable of displaying a specific number of gray levels, which includes the steps of: (1) selecting a plurality of colors from the image, one for each of the multitones, each having a color value; (2) selecting a plurality of transfer functions, one for each of the selected colors; (3) converting each of the shades of gray, using the respective color values and the transfer functions, into a new color value; and (4) displaying the resultant multitone image on a video display terminal using the new color values in place of the shades of gray. The displayed image may be printed using one printing plate for each of the selected colors, and using the same transfer functions to convert the shades of gray to new gray values which are subsequently converted into halftone dots for each printing plate.
The present invention relates to a method for producing multitone image data from data representative of an original image and, in particular, for producing multitone image data with a set of N output darkness levels U greater than 2 from original darkness values V.sub.o representative of an original image.
A method and system for rapidly transmitting multicolor or gray scale display data having multiple bits per pixel to a display device is provided. In a preferred embodiment, the method and system constitutes a software facility. The facility first encodes the image into multiple bit per pixel raster data. The multiple bit per pixel raster data has a number of pixels. Each pixel stores a color value corresponding to the color of a particular region within the image. The facility then associates one or more single bit per pixel raster planes with the multiple bit per pixel raster data. Each single bit per pixel raster plane corresponds to a color value that appears in the multiple bit per pixel raster data. Each pixel of each single bit per pixel raster plane corresponds to a pixel of the multiple bit per pixel raster data, and indicates whether the corresponding pixel in the multiple bit per pixel raster data contains the color value of the single bit per pixel raster plane. The facility then transmits the associated single bit per pixel raster planes to the display device. Each single bit per pixel raster plane is accompanied by one or more instructions to draw the single bit per pixel raster plane in the corresponding color value.
Methods and apparatus for accurately surveying and determining the physical location of objects in a scene are disclosed which use image data captured by one or more cameras and three points from the scene which may either be measured after the images are captured or may be included in the calibrated target placed in the scene at the time of image capture. Objects are located with respect to a three dimensional coordinate system defined with reference to the three points. The methods and apparatus permit rapid set up and capture of precise location data using simple apparatus and simple image processing. The precise location and orientation of the camera utilized to capture each scene is determined from image data, from the three point locations and from optical parameters of the camera.

A method for the conversion of an CEPS image data file to a vector dominated Page Description Language (PDL) file. The CEPS image data file can include LineWork image data, Continuous Tone image data and High resolution Continuous Tone (HC) data. The Page Description Language file can be realized as a composite file or a separated file.
