An adaptive audio processor for stereo AM broadcast signals includes independent signal processing paths. Each path has a variable lowpass filter and a matrix and variable Q 10 kHz notch filter to form LEFT and RIGHT channel signals with a 10 kHz notched pass band determined by adjacent channel noise. A 10 kHz pass band signal representative of adjacent channel noise from one of the signal processing paths is compared to a reference to generate a correction signal that is fedback to control the lowpass and notch filters. The correction signal adjusts the pass band and Q of the lowpass and notch filters so that the effects of adjacent channel noise are minimized. Other receiver signals which are reflective of the quality of the received broadcast signal, e.g., the AGC signal, an excess modulation signal, and a receiver microprocessor signal are similarly employed to control the lowpass and notch filters.
In a direct conversion radio frequency receiver, an automatic gain control is implemented that allows changing the operation mode of a filter unit in the baseband section of the receiver such that in a first operation mode filter capacities are selected to provide desired output signal characteristics, whereas in a second operation mode the filter settling time is significantly reduced in order to speed up gain adaptation and to improve gain loop stability. In one embodiment the cut-off frequency of a high pass filter and the Q-factor of a subsequent low pass filter are increased and decreased respectively upon changing the gain setting of a variable gain amplifier to accelerate settling of the filter.

An audio signal processing circuit reduces noise in an incoming audio signal and is particularly useful in telephone communication systems utilizing one or more hands-free microphones. A preferred embodiment of the audio signal processing circuit includes a pre-emphasis circuit receiving the audio signal from a microphone or other transducer, an amplifier circuit receiving the pre-emphasized audio signal from the pre-emphasis circuit and a de-emphasis circuit receiving the amplified signal from the amplifier circuit. An output of the de-emphasis circuit provides the processed audio signal having an improved signal to noise ratio with minimum audible distortion. A preferred embodiment of the amplification circuit includes an amplifier defining a non-linear transfer function therethrough which provides low gain to the lower amplitude noise signals and higher gain to the higher amplitude audio signals.
