Abstract
A low friction shoe insert of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene or the like having a coefficient of friction of 0.3 or less with an array of detachable discrete cushion elements on the shoe contacting lower surface to both frictionally anchor the insert to the shoe and permit the shape to be customized to the wearers foot and selectively relieve pressure on painful and sensitive areas.

A novel insole orthoses pad that may be inserted into a shoe alleviates the formation of ulcers aggravated by plantar shear forces and vertical forces. The insole orthoses pad, has vertically aligned strips of a material that support and cushion vertical forces alternated with a more flexible material that allows the supporting material to move from proximal-lateral to distal medial in response to shear forces without abrading the plantar surface. The combination of alternating strips of material are aligned so as to anticipate the orientation of the shear forces generated during the execution of a step by the wearer. Arcs of cushioning material are provided on a pad to protect likely sites of ulcer formation, having an orientation direction that is the average of the locus of maximum pressure in order to reduce the rubbing of the cushion material due to shear forces.

A foot protection kit includes a flat planar storage container for transporting and displaying a right foot protector and a left foot protector that are substantially identical in construction, each having a protuberance marker that facilitates proper footwear orientation. An instruction sheet is included in the kit for guiding a user relative to placing the right foot protector and the left foot protector in mirror image orientation so that they can be distinguished from one another for proper footwear orientation purposes. For assembly purposes after orienting the foot protectors in a mirror image orientation, the user lifts a foot hook portion of a foundation planar sheet upwardly from the sheet, bending it forward and away from a heel portion of the foot protector until the foot hook portion is parallel and slightly spaced apart from a platform area so that a slit in the foot hook portion is in alignment with a marker disposed in the platform area. The user then lifts a toe guard hook portion upwardly from the foundation sheet, bending it rearward a sufficient distance to allow its free terminal end to pass through the slit and releasing it into latching engagement with the foot hook portion to form a foot strap that holds the foot protector in engagement with the foot of the user.

A sock which provides increased comfort to the wearer as a result of reduced friction between the sock and the foot. The reduced friction is accomplished by treating the sock with a fluoropolymer. The treated sock contains discrete fluoropolymer particles (in non-membranous form) on or near the surface which contacts the foot. The treatment can by carried out by spraying, dipping, impregnating, coating of precursor fibers, or other conventional coating methods.

A shoe insert that can be customized by the user to control pronation of the foot and to relieve or reduce stress at painful areas of the foot comprising a film of plastic capable of being deformed to the shape of the foot by the weight of the user. The film includes fastening hook or loop material on at least one surface whereby detachable cushioning elements can be attached to the film. The cushioning element is preferably a sheet of loop cloth that continuously covers one or both surfaces of the film. The cushioning pads also contain a sheet of loop or hook material on one or both surfaces. The pads can be inclined to affect pronation or can contain apertures to relieve stress. The outer edges of the pads and the upper edge of the aperture are preferably chamfered or rounded to reduce discomfort.
