A digital memory used by a digital telephone answering device to record messages, a method by which vacant memory space created by the deletion of a message interlying two saved messages is recovered for future message recording use. Available vacated memory is transferred to the top of memory while saved messages are moved to form a contiguous block in lower memory. The location of messages in the digital memory, and save/delete flag, are stored in an entry table for reference and memory management.
An automatic call distribution system (10) with a multiport switch (12) which selectively interconnects telephonic units (16) of an internal network with a plurality of external units (13) of an external telephonic network (14) having an emergency recording system (11) with at least one recorder (18) interconnected with a port of the switch (12), establishing an informational group of units (14), an emergency key (32) on the console (30) of the unit (16) for requesting the recording of a call connected with the unit (16) in which a recorder (18) from a corresponding group is assigned to record the call at the requesting unit (16).
A variable ring count device in customer premises equipment is provided and includes a processor, a call related information detector/receiver in communication with a telephone line and a call related information directory in communication with the processor. The call related information directory associates pre-set call related information with a corresponding ring count. The processor is operable for an incoming call to compare call related information for the incoming call to the pre-set call related information in the call related information directory, and to determine a ring count for the incoming call based on a correlation between the call related information and the pre-set call related information in the call related information directory.
A method for recording a digitized audio signal and a telephone answering machine in which this method can be advantageously employed. A digitized audio signal is written in during a first time segment, and the written-in data are then stored in memory in a storage medium for digital data. After the first time segment, the writing in of the digital input signal is continued. The data now written in are compressed by a predetermined compression algorithm in accordance with a predetermined data compression rate. Finally, the thus-compressed data are stored in the storage medium for digital data. With the method, especially economical utilization of a limited memory storage volume is possible.

The method also provides for the selection of group greetings and mailboxes automatically, for example, based on CLID and name match in a directory.
