Abstract
Disclosed herein are polyurethane compositions specifically adapted to produce non-porous membranes exhibiting waterproof and water vapor transmissible charactertistics. The membranes can be produced as free standing products or can be produced as coatings on porous substrates to confer similar properties to such substrates. Also disclosed are coated fabrics and fabric laminates utilizing the membranous coatings of the invention and exhibiting waterproof and water vapor transmissible characteristics. Such coated fabrics and fabric laminates find utility in the fabrication of tenting, rainwear and other garments where waterproofness, coupled with breathability, are important features.

A polyurethane composition suitable for producing leather-like sheets having a soft hand and excellent durability and being dyeable with acid dyes comprising a mixture of: a first polyurethane (a) obtained by reacting: an intermediate product diol (D) with both ends thereof substantially being OH and obtained by reacting a tertiary amino group-containing diol (A), a polymer diol (B) having a number average molecular weight of 500 to 3,000 selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polycarbonates, polylactones and polyethers and an organic diisocyanate (C1), in such stoichiometric amounts as to make the molar ratio of NCO/OH 0.5 to 0.99, a low molecular weight diol (E), and diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (C2), and a second polyurethane (b) having a solubility in toluene of not more than 50% by weight and obtained by reacting a polymer diol having structural units from dimethylsiloxane and a second organic diisocyanate and having a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 10,000, the ratio of said second polyurethane (b) to said first polyurethane (a) being in a range of 0.5 to 50% by weight.

5770529 - Liquid-distribution garment - Owned by Kimberly-Clark Corporation (Neenah, WI)

A liquid-distribution garment worn in body-side combination with substantially impermeable protective apparel. The garment is composed of at least one layer of a hydrophilically transmuted reinforcing fabric; and at least one layer of a hydrophilically transmuted absorbent nonwoven fabric joined to the layer of reinforcing fabric so that the joined layers have a water wicking rate of at least about 4 centimeters per 30 seconds in at least one direction. The garment may contain a body portion, sleeve portions and/or leg portions, at least one of those portions being formed from the material composed of at least one layer of a hydrophilically transmuted reinforcing fabric and at least one layer of a hydrophilically transmuted absorbent nonwoven fabric. The garment may have sub-portions that contain superabsorbents.

5487189 - Coveralls having reduced seams and seamless shoulder construction and method of manufacture - Owned by Kimberly-Clark Corporation (Neenah, WI)

Disclosed is disposable protective coveralls having a reduced number of seams and a seamless shoulder construction. The disposable protective coveralls include a first body half and a second body half. Each body half is formed from a seamless sheet of material. The second body half is substantially a mirror image of the first body half. Each body half includes: 1) a body portion having a first and second edge and a top edge extending approximately half-way across the body portion from the second edge; 2) a sleeve portion having a top and bottom sleeve edge, a top edge, and a segment of the second edge of the body portion; and 3) a leg portion having a front and a rear leg edge. The protective coveralls' construction also includes approximately eight seams and a closure. More particularly, body halves are united into protective coveralls by: a closure joining the first edges of each body portion on each body half; a seam joining the second edges of the body portion, including the segment of the second edges in the sleeve portions, on each body half; sleeve seams joining the top sleeve edges to the bottom sleeve edges on each body half; inseams joining the front leg edges to the back leg edges on each body half; and back seams joining each top edge of a sleeve portion with the top edge of its respective body portion on each body half. Also disclosed is a method of making protective coveralls having a reduced number of seams and a seamless shoulder construction.

6139675 - Process of manufacturing a water-based adhesive bonded, solvent resistant protective laminate - Owned by Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc. (Neenah, WI)

Disclosed is a process of manufacturing a water-based adhesive bonded, solvent resistant protective laminate utilizing the steps of: providing a film having a first surface and a second surface; depositing a discontinuous coating of a cross-linkable; carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber latex adhesive on the first surface of the film, the latex adhesive containing an effective amount of a cross-linking agent; joining a fibrous nonwoven web into intimate bonding contact with the film and adhesive; and removing water from the adhesive thereby causing cross-linking at reactive sites. The adhesive may be deposited utilizing gravure printing techniques and is desirably deposited at a rate greater than about 2 grams per square meter of film. Also disclosed is an adhesively bonded, solvent resistant protective laminate produced by the process. The film component of the laminate may be composed of a thermoset polymer or a thermoplastic polymer. The film may also be microporous or microapertured. The nonwoven fibrous web component may be selected from bonded carded webs, spunbonded webs, webs of meltblown fibers, multi-ply fibrous webs containing the same type of fibrous web, and multi-ply fibrous webs containing different types of fibrous webs.

5509142 - Raised arm coveralls - Owned by Kimberly-Clark Corporation (Neenah, WI)

Disclosed is a disposable protective coverall formed from a high strength barrier fabric, the coverall being composed of a body portion having a neck opening in a shoulder line at its top; two sleeve portions extending from the body portion in which each sleeve portion has an inner edge and an outer edge; and two leg portions extending from the body portion. The outer edge of each sleeve portion extends upward from the shoulder line at an angle ranging from about 10.degree. to about 90.degree. and the inner edge of each sleeve extends upward from the body portion below the shoulder line so that arm movement is permitted without significant pulling or stressing of other portions of the coverall. The high strength barrier fabric can be a laminate containing at least one nonwoven web and at least one film layer. Desirably, the film layer has a thickness of at least about 1 mil and has a peak energy of at least 6 inch.cndot.pounds force per square inch in both the machine and cross-machine directions. The high strength barrier fabric may also be a breathable barrier laminate which provides a water vapor transmission rate greater than about 100 gm/m.sup.2 /24 hours.
