Abstract
An FM receiver includes an IF unit followed by an LF unit. The receiver has circuitry for changing the signal transmission characteristic of the IF and/or LF units, including a detector module with detector circuits for detecting values characteristic of receiving or interference states, with the inputs of these detector circuits each being connected with a circuit point of the IF or LF unit carrying the signal to be processed and with the outputs of these detector circuits providing signal characterizing receiving the interference states. The circuitry for changing the signal transmission characteristic also includes an evaluation circuit for processing the signals characteristic of receiving or interference states, the evaluation circuit having an input portion with at least one amplitude and/or time threshold circuit connected with the detector module and having a logic unit which is connected to the input portion and which provides processed signals characteristic of receiving and interference states as control signals to influence individual stages of the IF or LF unit. One of the detector circuits in the detector module determines if the demodulated signal undergoes a voltage leap exceeding a predetermined value, and if so a follow-up voltage for controlling the center frequency of a relatively narrow-banded IF filter is cut off.

5678214 - RF receiver using if amplifier operative during low level reception - Owned by NEC Corporation (Tokyo,JP)

In a radio-frequency receiver, a received RF signal is converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) signal and band-limited by a first IF filter to a channel bandwidth. The level of the output of the IF filter is detected by a detector and compared with a threshold to produce a first and a second output when the detected level is lower or higher than the threshold, respectively. A switching circuit applies the output of the IF filter to a demodulator via an IF amplifier in response to the first output and directly applies it to the demodulator in response to the second output. To prevent interference from adjacent channels, a second intermediate frequency filter is connected between the band-limiting IF filter and the detector. The second IF filter has a passband corresponding to a center frequency portion of the passband of the band-limiting IF filter.

6047171 - Method and apparatus for combating adjacent channel interference using multiple IF filters - Owned by Ericsson Inc. (Research Triangle Park, NC)

A receiver includes at least two intermediate frequency (IF) filters, with the first IF filter and a second filter having a narrower bandwidth than the first bandwidth. The receiver also includes a switch operable to select between the IF filters. In use, the receiver measures the signal strength of adjacent channels to the signal strength of a desired channel and switches to the second IF filter with a narrower bandwidth when a ratio of the signal strength of the channel and the signal strength of adjacent channels is less than a predetermined threshold. The predetermined threshold is determined based on considerations of range of detection and adjacent channel interference. The bandwidth of the filters in the receiver is also designed to optimize performance in consideration of both range of detection and adjacent channel interference.

6169447 - Stabilization of passband active filters - Owned by NEC Corporation (Tokyo,JP)

A calibrator for stabilization of a passband active filter firstly sets a low level of filter supply current to assure filter stability while the filter is tuned to the required passband. The supply current is then gradually increased until the filter becomes unstable. The supply current level is held constant when filter instability is detected and the current is then reduced by a pre-determined amount to maintain stability of the filter. Re-tuning of the filter may then proceed without risk of instability. May be used as part of a phase locked loop for operating channel selection in a radio.

A frequency modulation receiving apparatus comprises a signal-converting circuit for converting a signal received by an antenna into a signal consisting of wave clusters having various frequencies, first limiting circuit for limiting those of the wave clusters which have frequencies outside a first frequency range, second limiting circuit for limiting those of the wave clusters which have frequencies outside a second frequency range narrower than the first frequency range, shearing circuit for combining and outputting a ratio of a signal output by the first limiting circuit and a signal output by the second limiting circuit, frequency-demodulating circuit for frequency-demodulating a signal output by the selecting circuit, detecting circuit for detecting whether or not an adjacent interfering wave exists in a signal output by the frequency-demodulating circuit, and for outputting a signal indicating whether or not an adjacent interfering wave exists in the signal, and control circuit for delaying a signal output by the detecting circuit and supplying the signal to the selecting circuit, thereby to control the selecting circuit.

7221917 - Adjacent channel interference mitigation for FM digital audio broadcasting receivers - Owned by IBiquity Digital Corporation (Columbia, MD)

A method of receiving an FM digital audio broadcasting signal including a first plurality of subcarriers in an upper sideband of a radio channel and a second plurality of subcarriers in a lower sideband of the radio channel comprises the steps of mixing the digital audio broadcasting signal with a local oscillator signal to produce an intermediate frequency signal, passing the intermediate frequency signal through a bandpass filter to produce a filtered signal, determining if one of the upper and lower sidebands of the digital audio broadcasting signal is corrupted, and adjusting the local frequency oscillator signal to change the frequency of the intermediate frequency signal such that the bandpass filter removes the subcarriers in the upper or lower sideband that has been corrupted. A receiver that processes a digital audio broadcasting signal in accordance with the method is also provided.
