Abstract
An aircraft display system has a display unit comprising a matrix array of LED's mounted in the glareshield. Air traffic command signals received by a datalink processor produce a visual indication on the display unit which is visible to the pilot when looking through the window. A button on the display unit is pressed by the pilot to acknowledge receipt of instructions. Other important messages are displayed by the display unit at different times. Radar altimeter height is displayed in a color which changes when the aircraft descends below its flare height. When on the ground, the display unit displays alphanumerically the distance-to-go to the end of the runway, and simultaneously displays stripes that move horizontally to indicate deviation of the aircraft from the runway center line.

5724765 - Herbicide applicator with vegetation grabbing jaws

Liquid herbicide be applied to individual weeds with an apparatus that includes a shaft to which a herbicide reservoir is attached. A pair of opposing jaws is pivotally attached to a one end of the shaft. Each jaw includes a plate with a surface from which a plurality of needles project and an absorbent pad into which the needles extend. A user operable pump is mounted on the shaft and a conduit coupling an inlet of the pump to the reservoir. Another conduit couples the outlet of the pump to the absorbent pad on each jaw. An lever, at the other end of the shaft, is connected to the pair of jaws by a cable. When a user moves the lever, the pair of opposing jaws pivot into a position at which that the weed is grasped between the absorbent pads with the needles penetrating the weed. Herbicide, in the absorbent pads, coats the surface of the weed and then flows into holes produced by the needles.

5808563 - Device for the control of an aircraft system in manual pilot mode using notably a head-up display - Owned by Sextant Avionique (Meudon la Foret,FR)

A device to control an aircraft system in manual pilot mode, using notably a head-up display, is constituted by a display screen located at the position of a piece of equipment of the right-hand part of the instrument panel, the screen displaying information elements delivered by the replaced equipment and information elements to control the piloting task. Application for the controlling of a manual pilot phase by a co-pilot in an aircraft using a head-up display.

5416705 - Method and apparatus for use of alphanumeric display as data entry scratchpad - Owned by Honeywell Inc. (Minneaoplis, MN)

An aircraft control and display system having a multifunction display for configuring the vehicle flight parameters and control of mission equipment utilizes a dedicated alphanumeric display as a scratchpad memory for temporarily displaying IFF mode commands encoded in alphanumeric form and for changing an IFF transponder code, thereby obviating the use of the multifunction display and the need thereby for reprogramming the mission functions. Codes entered in the alphanumeric display are validated against codes stored in a master control processor unit, whereby a prompt is provided to the operator to reenter the code in the event of an error in entry or an invalid code.

7177731 - Systems and methods for handling aircraft information received from an off-board source - Owned by The Boeing Company (Chicago, IL)

Systems and computer-implemented methods for handling incoming aircraft operation instructions are disclosed. A method in accordance with one embodiment of the invention includes receiving from a source off-board an aircraft an instruction for a change in a characteristic of the aircraft during operation (e.g., a change in heading, altitude or air speed of the aircraft). The method can further include automatically determining whether or not at least a portion of the instruction is to be implemented once a condition is met. If at least a portion of the instruction is to be implemented once a condition is met, the method can further include automatically carrying out a first course of action. If implementation of at least a portion of the instruction is not predicated upon fulfilling a condition is met, the method can further include automatically carrying out a second course of action different than the first course of action. Carrying out the first course of action can include determining what condition must be met and then presenting an indication to an operator of the aircraft before, after, or both before and after the condition is met.

7142131 - Method and apparatus for displaying aircraft engine characteristics - Owned by The Boeing Company (Chicago, IL)

A method and system for displaying aircraft engine information. In one embodiment, the method includes directing the display of an icon that represents a qualitative, overall operational state of an aircraft engine, with the overall operational state being determined from a plurality of engine operating parameters. The method can further include directing a change in the display of the icon when the overall operational state of the aircraft engine changes from a first overall operational state to a second operational state. In a further aspect of this embodiment, the change in the characteristic of the icon can include a change in the color or other visual characteristic of the icon, and the color or other visual characteristic of the icon can correspond directly to instructions to the pilot for actions suggested or required as a result of the current engine operational state.
