A data communications network providing for automatic reconfiguration of a hub concentrator or the like dependent on the protocol used by a device attached to the concentrator. The concentrator includes a circuit for receiving a message packet from a device coupled with the concentrator and for determining the protocol used in the transmission. Utilization of the disclosed circuit provides for automatic reconfiguration in the event a device is moved from one port on the concentrator to another port or a new device is connected to the concentrator.

Method and apparatus for sending, receiving, and displaying textual and/or graphic data via an alphanumeric paging system wherein source data in binary form is converted to an alphanumeric code for transmission via the paging system; a paging receiver with storage capability used in combination with a computer then receives the transmitted data and downloads the alphanumeric code data for reconversion to binary data and subsequent display of the text and/or graphic data.

A portable radio device (106) has a first operational mode and a second operational mode, and includes a receiver (314), a controller (315), and a mode control device (350). The receiver (314) receives an indexed information message. The controller (315) stores an authorized information field list and is coupled to the receiver (314). The controller (315) decodes the indexed information message, generates an index portion of the decoded indexed information message, and generates a mode control schedule determined by the index portion and the authorized information field list. The mode control device (350) is coupled to the controller (315) for controlling the first and second modes of the portable radio device according to the mode control schedule.

A system for integrated data delivery in 9-1-1 calls for service application. Specifically, the invention describes a machine executed method to provide: 1) the ability to capture and utilize decoded caller data--caller data could be in the format of dual tone multifrequency, multifrequency, or frequency shift keying coding formats; 2) automatically interrogate one or more computer databased using caller data (telephone number) as a search key: 3) intergrate and format the caller information as it is returned by the database search--such information could include the address of the caller, the geopolitical jurisdiction information (e.g., the police, fire, or ambulance service responsible for a particular geographic area), and the ability to integrate this information plus any additional information provided by the calltaker; 4) automatically tramsmit the integrated data via a leased or a dial up telephone line to a radio common carrier such as a paging service for broadcast to the end-user.

Control data to change any of various parameters in energy management systems that control energy consumption devices, such as heating and air conditioning equipment, is transmitted from a remote location, through a paging network, to a plurality of paging data receivers connected to respective energy management systems. The paging data receivers respond to a common call and pass the accompanying control data to their respective energy management systems, which individually react depending on whether one or more predetermined addresses is/are within the control data. A response to the remote site can be provided by an energy management system through the commercial telephone network.
