An on-site selective call receiver interacts with a wide area selective call system to increase the probability of timely message reception by a selective call receiver capable of operating in either the wide area or the on-site selective call system. A frequency shifting signal is transmitted from the wide area system in response to addition of the selective call receiver to the on-site registry or automatic detection of entry of the selective call receiver into the on-site selective call system coverage area. The selective call receiver shifts to the wide area frequency in response to detecting that the receiver is out of range of the on-site system signal or in response to a signal transmitted by the on-site system in response to deletion of the receiver from the on-site registry or detection of the exit of the receiver from the on-site coverage area. The on-site system increases message throughput by interleaving data messages with voice messages. The messages broadcast for the selective call receiver by the wide area system are rebroadcast by the on-site system. The messages broadcast by the on-site system, if data messages, are provided to the wide area system for rebroadcast or, if voice messages are stored in a voice mailbox and a "voice message stored in mailbox" message is provided to the wide area system for transmission.
A reference channel maintenance method for a wide area paging system connected to a public telephone network and having at least one reference frequency channel through which a paging signal can be transmitted is provided. When an incoming paging signal is not received from a public telephone network and transmitted to a desired wide area radio pager through the reference frequency channel within a predetermined time period, a dummy paging signal is generated and transmitted to the wide area radio pager through the reference frequency channel.
A method, in a SCR (Selective Call Receiver) (10), for providing to a user of the SCR (10) a voice memo in explanation of a received message. The SCR stores distinctive data (63) and a user-generated voice memo (67) that relates to the distinctive data. The voice memo (67) and the distinctive data (63) are stored in the SCR in association with each other. When a subsequent transmitted message (73) containing matching distinctive data is received, the SCR can annunciate the stored voice memo (67) in explanation of the subsequent message. Another feature allows voice memos to be stored and annunciated to explain the reason for alarms that are generated at times selected by the user.
A mobile communication system includes a mobile terminal serving as a mobile terminal equipment. The mobile terminal has a pager electric field level monitor section, a PHS field level monitor section and a controller. The pager field level monitor section is for judging whether a pager receiver is within a service area of a pager base station or not. The PHS field level monitor section is for judging whether a PHS receiver is within a service area of a PHS base station or not. The controller is to control pager calling or PHS callings by the pager base station or the PHS base station according to the monitored results by the PHS field level monitor section and the pager field level monitor section. Owing to such arrangements, it is possible to improve the reception performance and the communication reliability of the mobile terminal as a pager, and thus construct an economical mobile communication system even in places like premises and underground passages.
