Abstract
A vacuum infusion system and method provides for the introduction of desired chemical or treatment fluid directly into functional water conducting elements of a tree without the introduction of air and the subsequent embolization and dysfunction of part of the trees normal transpirational stream. With the present system and method, an orificed-needle is passed through a previously evacuated chamber containing a liquid medium which has been degassed. The insertion of the orificed-needle through this degassed liquid prevents the introduction of air into the tree while the treatment fluid is being pulled into the tree's transpirational stream by the normal xylem tension.

6484440 - Perforated hollow spike for introducing a water soluble compound into a tree's vascular system

A spike, drivable into the trunk of a tree, includes a hollow body which provides a storage chamber for a water soluble compound such as a pesticide or fertilizer. The spike has a generally pointed first end which facilitates driving the spike into a tree trunk. The hollow body is equipped with bleed apertures near the pointed end, so that when the spike is driven into the trunk of a tree, the storage chamber is coupled to the vascular system thereof. The spike is supplied with a resilient sheath that seals the bleed apertures during shipping and handling. As the spike is driven into a tree trunk, the sheath is peeled off the body, thereby exposing the bleed apertures to the tree's vascular tissue and forming a gasket between the spike body and the aperture created by driving the spike into the trunk.

6405480 - Fluid injection apparatus and method

A fluid injection apparatus and associated method for supplying a pressurized fluid to a permeable portion of a tree. A fluid injection apparatus comprising a receptacle engageable with the tree forms a chamber around the permeable portion of the tree. A reservoir supplies fluid to a pump which selectively transfers the fluid from the reservoir to the chamber, pressurizing the fluid in the chamber. A tree stand comprising a tree clamp and supporting legs can comprise the fluid injection apparatus. The apparatus enables the method of supplying a pressurized fluid to the permeable portion of a tree comprising: providing a fluid-retaining chamber around a permeable portion of the tree; providing a reservoir containing a supply of the fluid; and selectively pumping the fluid from the reservoir to pressurize the chamber.
