In a video tape recorder of the color under recording type, in which a low frequency band converted carrier chrominance signal is recorded together with an FM luminance signal, another FM modulator is provided for modulating a wide band chrominance signal. An additional head records the FM chrominance signal on at least a part of a track on which video signal has been recorded in the color under recording. In reproduction, it is checked whether the FM chrominance signal is reproduced or not for selecting the FM chrominance signal or the color under recorded carrier chrominance signal as a reproduced chrominance signal output.
In the event of recording a picture signal for left eye and a picture signal for right eye, a picture signal for one of right and left eyes limited in band by a low pass filter as being an additional signal and a picture signal for the other eye as being a primary signal, and the additional signal together with the primary signal are recorded on recording medium.
A digitally recording and reproducing apparatus simultaneously records two kinds of digital signals of an identical video program, generated by high-efficiency coding, or a relatively high bit-rate signal and a relatively low bit-rate signal, onto the approximately the same positions on the tape. The apparatus is constructed so that the low bit-rate signal is commonly used for normal playback and search-playback. Further, the recording time can be lengthened by reducing the recording bit-rate.
