Abstract
A method for detecting high speed data received by a computer and for delaying displaying the receive data, thereby increase the microprocessor time devoted to receiving and storing the input data. Three parameters are utilized for determining when updating the display should be delayed because data input speed is high. First, if the input data is close to filling the computer's receive buffer, the data input speed is high. Second, if the data input port becomes idle, no more data is being input to the computer and the display may be updated. Third, if the display has not been updated recently, as indicated by a preset timer timing out, an update of the display is forced so that the user can verify that data is successfully being input. By varying and limiting the number of display updates, the microprocessor is allocated more time to store and process received data when the data input speed demands. By improving the microprocessor's ability to store and process received data, data communications are not disrupted.

The host controller grants access of the system memory bus to the graphics controller with a higher priority (i.e. above that of other devices such as CPU and I/O devices) in response to the high priority MREQ signal, and with a lower priority in response to the low priority MREQ signal. Upon being granted access to the system memory bus, the graphics controller retrieves display data from the frame buffer. By employing the low priority MREQ signal, the system memory bus is more efficiently utilized and the frequency of high priority MREQ signals is minimized which leads to an overall increase in the throughput performance of the information processing system.

A digital acquisition system maximizes the number of points captured when a user issues a stop command, while maximizing the update rate during continuous operation. Upon receiving a stop command for the user, the present invention sets up to take a deep memory acquisition at a slower update rate (i.e., set so as to capture a maximum number of points). If a trigger is received within a predetermined period of time after the stop command is received, then a deep memory acquisition is taken, and the captured points are displayed to the user for viewing. If a trigger is not received within the predetermined period of time after the stop command is received, then the last acquisition taken at the optimum update rate remains displayed for viewing by the user.
