Abstract
An air bag module includes an air bag and an inflator for discharging gas to inflate the air bag. The module includes a cover having a plurality of hooks and a base plate including a plurality of apertures for capturing the hooks of the cover therein. To securely retain the cover to the base plate, a cover retainer being a discontinuous resilient ring is utilized. The retainer is radially deformable for snap-fitted engagement with the base plate directly adjacent the hooks of the cover such that the retainer traps the hooks between the base plate and the retainer to prevent removal of the hooks from the apertures of the base plate and to anchor the cover to the base plate during air bag inflation.

5992875 - Airbag assembly - Owned by Breed Automotive Technology, Inc. (Lakeland, FL)

An airbag assembly comprises a mounting member for attachment to part of the vehicle, an airbag secured to the mounting member and a cover for the airbag. The cover is connected to the mounting member at least partly by snap fit fastening. In another aspect, the cover is attached to the member by connecting a bent over flange on the cover to the mounting member. The method of assembly comprises assembling the cover, airbag and mounting member together into an airbag mounting sub-assembly and then attaching an airbag inflator to the sub-assembly.

7048297 - Gas bag module - Owned by TRW Automotive Safety Systems GmbH (Aschaffenburg,DE)

A gas bag module comprises a module housing (12) and a covering cap (14), a side wall (15) being provided on at least one of the module housing (12) and the covering cap (14). An outer wall (16) of the covering cap defines a front side of the module and an outer wall (18) of the module housing (12) defines a rear side of the module, whereby an outlet direction (R) is given that runs from the rear side to the front side of the module. The module housing (12) has first fastening elements (20) and the covering cap (14) has second fastening elements (22) which can be brought into engagement with the first fastening elements. The first and second fastening elements (20, 22) are arranged and aligned with respect to the side wall (15) such that the engagement of the first and second fastening elements (20, 22), which prevents an uncoupling of the covering cap (14) and of the module housing (12) in a gas bag outlet direction (R), comes about through a movement of the fastening elements (20, 22) relative to each other in a direction (E) that runs along the side wall (15) and transversely to the outlet direction (R).

6126192 - No fasteners side air bag module - Owned by Autoliv ASP, Inc. (Ogden, UT)

An air bag safety system comprising an air bag cushion and a cylindrical-shaped inflator assembly connected to the air bag cushion. The inflator assembly is figured to rapidly fill the air bag cushion upon being actuated. The inflator assembly is attached to a base plate by an attachment assembly configured to attach the inflator assembly to the base plate without either applying force to the inflator assembly so as to deform the attachment assembly or applying heat to the inflator assembly. The attachment assembly comprises a tie strip and a retention mechanism configured to lock the tie strip in place to hold the inflator assembly on the base plate. The air bag safety system also includes a plurality of resilient mounting hooks configured to cooperate with either a frame member within the vehicle occupant compartment or an attachment piece mounted to the frame member, such that air bag safety system can be snapped in place. The air bag safety system also includes a heat shield attached to the base plate to protect the interior surface of said air bag cushion from the gases used to rapidly inflate the air brag cushion. A method of assembling the air bag safety system is also provided.

A safety device housed in a motor vehicle and used in the field of automobile safety has an impervious inflatable metal bag fixed to a support, a pyrotechnic charge, and an ignition device intended to be connected to a source of electrical current. The bag includes a first metal sheet which has a central orifice, an intermediate fixing zone attached to the support and a peripheral fixing zone and a solid domed second metal sheet which has a peripheral fixing zone. The two metal sheets are fixed together at their peripheral fixing zones. The pyrotechnic charge is contained in the bag.

7384064 - Driver air bag module and method of assembly - Owned by General Motors Corporation (Detroit, MI)

An air bag module includes an inflatable cushion, an inner plate receivable within the cushion and a cover adapted to contain the cushion prior to inflation thereof. The inner plate and cushion are receivable within the cover. The base plate attaches to the inner plate. A portion of the cushion and a portion of the cover abut one another and are sandwiched directly between the base plate and the inner plate. The sandwiched portion of the cover is retained between the inner plate and the base plate (and preferably cupped by the base plate). The cushion, cover and attached inner plate and base plate remain retained to one another when the cushion is inflated. A method of assembling the air bag module is also provided.
