Abstract
A rotary cone drill bit for forming a borehole having a bit body with an upper end portion adapted for connection to a drill string. A number of angularly-spaced support arms formed to extend from the bit body. Each support arm has an inside surface with a spindle connected thereto and an outer shirttail surface. A number of cutter cones equal to the number of support arms are rotatably mounted on respective spindles. Each of the cutter cones includes an internal cylindrical cavity for receiving the respective spindle. A gap with a generally cylindrical portion is formed between the spindle and the cavity with a seal element disposed within the gap. The gap has an opening contiguous with the bottom edge of the shirttail surface and extending outwardly from the spindle. A shirttail ring is disposed on the exterior of each spindle between the cutter cone and the inside surface of the respective support arm with a portion of the shirttail ring extending from the respective shirttail surface. A seal ring may be disposed on the exterior of the spindle adjacent to the shirttail ring. The seal ring cooperates with the sealing element to form a fluid barrier between the spindle and the cavity.

6116360 - Methods of manufacturing rotary drill bits - Owned by Camco International (UK) Limited (Stonehouse,GB)

A rotary drill bit is manufactured by a method including the step of forming at least a portion of the bit body from a precipitation hardening alloy, and brazing cutters to the bit body by a heating and cooling cycle during which the bit body is first heated to a temperature sufficient to melt the brazing material and is then cooled to room temperature, the heating and cooling brazing cycle being controlled in a manner so as also to effect precipitation hardening of the alloy from which the bit body is formed. In the case where the bit body is formed from solid infiltrated matrix material around a solid preformed mandrel, the heating and cooling cycle of the matrix forming process may also be controlled in a manner to effect precipitation hardening of the alloy from which the mandrel is formed.

6533051 - Roller cone drill bit shale diverter - Owned by Smith International, Inc. (Houston, TX)

A roller cone drill bit includes a bit body adapted to be rotated about a longitudinal axis. At least one leg which terminates in a shirttail portion depends from the bit body. The shirttail portion defines a first end face having a first circumferential groove thereon. The first circumferential groove has a radius equal to the radius of a tip of the shirttail portion. A journal is cantilevered from the leg, and a roller cone is rotatably mounted on the journal. The roller cone has a second end face adjacent to the first end face. A second circumferential groove is formed on the second end face.

7392862 - Seal insert ring for roller cone bits - Owned by Baker Hughes Incorporated (Houston, TX)

An earth boring bit has a bit body with a depending bearing pin. An insert ring is mounted on the bearing pin. The insert ring has an inner diameter greater than an outer diameter of the bearing pin, defining a clearance between the insert ring and the bearing pin to allow the insert ring to float relative to an axis of the bearing pin. An inner seal is in sealing engagement with the bearing pin and the inner diameter of the insert ring. A cone is rotatably mounted on the bearing pin, the cone having a cavity containing an outer seal groove. An outer seal located in the outer seal groove is in dynamic sealing engagement with an outer diameter of the insert ring. An anti-rotation member engages a portion of the insert ring to prevent rotation of the insert ring.

7387177 - Bearing insert sleeve for roller cone bit - Owned by Baker Hughes Incorporated (Houston, TX)

An earth boring bit has a bearing pin with a sleeve mounted on it. The sleeve is fixed against rotation but able to float relative to the bearing pin. A cone fits over and forms a bearing surface with the sleeve. The sleeve and bearing pin are configured to have a clearance between them that has a forward portion that progressively decreases in a rearward direction. The clearance progressively decreases in a forward direction from the rearward end of the sleeve. The cone and the sleeve are able to tilt in unison with each other relative to the bearing pin when the bit is loaded.

6220374 - Rotary cone drill bit with enhanced thrust bearing flange - Owned by Dresser Industries, Inc. (Dallas, TX)

The present invention allows the load-bearing capabilities of a drill bit thrust flange to be increased. The invention utilizes a thrust flange that is larger than the inside diameter of an associated drill bit journal bushing. The thrust flange may extend past the inside diameter of the journal bushing up to a distance equal to two times the thickness of the journal bushing. The invention may also utilize a thrust washer that is disposed adjacent the thrust flange to assist in bearing loads applied to the thrust flange.
