The present invention relates to hair care compositions which contain a polymer which is prepared from N-vinyl formamide (NVF) monomer and the use of those hair care compositions to treat hair. The polymer may be a homopolymer of NVF or an interpolymer of NVF and at least one vinyl monomer. The polymer is present in amounts effective to provide the hair care compositions with hair fixative properties and/or hair conditioning properties.
This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent applications, Ser. Nos. 08/286,850, filed Aug. 5, 1994 now U.S. Pat. No. 5,478,553, 08/417,358 pending, filed Apr. 5, 1955 and 08/417,369, filed Apr. 5, 1995 now U.S. Pat. 5,609,857.
An assay for emetic activity among inhibitors of type 4 phosphodiesterase (PDE 4) is disclosed. The assay comprises: (A) administering to a test mammal an anesthetic compound in an amount sufficient to cause an anesthetic effect; (B) administering to the test mammal a test compound that has PDE 4 inhibitory activity; (C) observing the test mammal for changes in the anesthetic effect, and (D) correlating any change in the anesthetic effect observed in the anesthetized test mammal to a standard.
Cosmetic products and methods of performing skin treatments are disclosed. The products and methods are especially suitable for removing keratotic plugs from the pores of skin. The cosmetic products are based on formulations including non-ionic, film-forming, solvent-activatable polymers as major active ingredients. Especially preferred formulations include N-vinyl formamide as in poly(N-vinyl formamide) as a major active ingredient. In some cases, the formulations are coated onto a backing material to form a patch in order to increase the utility and ease of use of the products. The products are used to remove keratotic plugs by applying the product to the skin, allowing the product to dry, and peeling the product from the skin. Also disclosed is a method for producing the preferred articles provided by the invention.
The present invention relates to a cosmetic composition which comprises at least one water-soluble or water-dispersible copolymer which is obtainable by free-radical copolymerization of at least one N-vinyllactam, at least one anionogenic monomer and optionally further .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated compounds copolymerizable therewith, in the presence of a polymer component with repeat units which have ether groups or which are derived from vinyl alcohol.
The present invention relates to hair care compositions which contain a polymer which is prepared from N-vinyl acetamide (NVAM) monomer and the use of those hair care compositions to treat hair. The polymer may be a homopolymer of NVAM or an interpolymer of NVAM and at least one vinyl monomer. The polymer is present in amounts effective to provide the hair care compositions with hair fixative properties and/or hair conditioning properties.
The present invention relates to hair conditioning or detailing compositions comprising from about 0.01 percent to about 2.0 percent by weight of a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula: ##STR1## and from about 0.01 percent to about 2.0 percent by weight of a silicone compound, wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl group having from about 11 to about 35 carbon atoms, X is --O--or N--R.sub.5, R.sub.1 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene group having from about 2 to about 6 carbon atoms, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are each independently an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group having from about 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, R.sub.5 is H or CH.sub.3, and A.sub.1 is chloride; bromide; alkylsulfate containing from about one to about two carbon atoms; or mixtures thereof.
