A method and apparatus for stacking newspapers is disclosed which obviates the need to fasten individual stacks. Once ejected from a stacking device, stacks of newspapers pass through an assembly station where they are arranged into groups of three, called slugs, and compressed. The slug then enters a collector where a layer consisting of four slugs is positioned on a sliding table. This positioning requires lateral movement of slugs. Lateral support is provided throughout this movement to prevent the stacks from toppling over. Once a full layer has been accumulated, the sliding table is retracted, and the layer of newspapers falls onto a floating table below. This floating table, which serves as the bottom floor of the container in which it is housed, is automatically lowered by discrete amounts as layers are received. Extendible cylinders located below the collector vertically move the floating table. Since the four walls of the container provide the requisite lateral support, layers of unfastened stacks are able to be securely deposited on the floating table. Once the full container is removed from the collector, a fork lift raises the floating table by inserting its prongs into a gap created between the floating table and the open bottom of the container. In another aspect of the invention, bottom copy damage associated with lateral movement of newspapers is reduced by positioning the stacks so that the nose of the bottom group of newspapers in each stack points in the ultimate direction of lateral movement.
A bundled sheet processing apparatus has a chute unit tilting between the first and second positions. A downstream side in the chute unit conveying direction, there is provided a stopper that has the contact surface narrower than the thickness of a bundle and stops the bundle by contacting the end of the bundle in the conveying direction with the contact surface. At this time, sheets protruding beyond the contact surface are detected by a detector.
Newspapers and other printed matter fed from a printing press or inserting machine are generally folded or delivered in a continuous stream with the papers oriented in an overlapped or imbricated relationship. The stream of papers are received and stacked by the stacking apparatus or stacker which must operate at high speeds. The stacker orients the papers in the stacks and ejects the bundles of papers. The present invention relates to devices intended to reduce the prospects for inadvertent interference with the stacking mechanism or to reduce the potential for injury.
A baby blanket of two layer construction which is generally rectangular in shape. The two layers are joined by one seam running along the bottom of the bag and a second seam running up the midline on the front of the bag. The midline seam runs from the bottom of the bag to about two-thirds of the distance to the top. The top 1/3 of the midline seam is left open. Means for releasably attaching the two sides of the blanket top are provided on the top of the blanket on each side of the open midline seam. In use, a baby is inserted into the top open end of the blanket. The two sides of the blanket top are then secured about the baby under its arms by the means for releasably attaching the two sides.
An apparatus moves a plurality of transport media along a path of travel. The plurality of transport media define at least two groups of transport media, where each group of transport media has substantially identical transverse dimensions with respect to one another within one group of transport media, while having substantially different transverse dimensions with respect to another group of transport media. The apparatus includes a plurality of rollers rotatably mounted in fixed locations spaced along a path of travel. At least one motor is provided for driving at least one of the rollers in rotation. At least one transport media is supported on the rollers for movement along the path of travel in response to rotation of the roller by the motor. Each transport media has at least one elongate support member continuously engageable with at least two rollers simultaneously while the transport media moves along the path of travel. A lift workstation can be located along the path of travel for transferring a workpiece carried by one transport media to another transport media.
