A coating on a substrate which endows the substrate with a desired surface property, the coating comprising a cross-linked polysiloxane containing X'-- and X-groups attached to different Si atoms wherein the groups X'-- are monovalent organic groups which provide the desired surface property and the groups X-- are monovalent organic groups which are reactive with a group on the substrate surface and have a higher surface tension than the groups X'--, said coating being bonded to said substrate by reaction of X-groups with substrate surface groups reactive therewith. In one embodiment a non-wetting coating is provided wherein the X'-- group has the formula CF.sub.3 Z-- where Z is a divalent organic group or the formula CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.t where t is at least 3.
A functionalized silicone with perfluorinated polyorganosiloxanes (POS) R.sub.f is used to produce coatings with low surface energy and improved adherence to supports. The compositions include a group POS A bearing, per molecule, bis-perfluoromalonate grafts Gf, functional radicals Fa of the amine (HALS) f.sub.a1, epoxy f.sub.a2, (poly)ether f.sub.a3, carboxy f.sub.a4 type, and optionally alkyl groups G.sub.alk. The invention is useful for producing soil release coatings for textiles.
A coat liquid, in which a methoxysilane or ethoxysilane compound which is a precursor of silicon oxide and an ethoxysilane or methoxysilane compound which contains therein a carbon fluoride chain are dissolved, is applied onto the surface of a base material of SUS having a thickness of 20 .mu.m. This is followed by drying the base material for one hour at room temperature condition. Thereafter, the base material is baked at 200 degrees centigrade for 30 minutes thereby to form a water repellent thin film having a thickness of from 10 nm to 1000 nm and containing therein a molecule in which fluoroalkyl chains are bonded to the silicon oxide. A nozzle orifice is formed by electrical discharge machining from the lower side of the base material.
A method for replenishing fouled coatings on a nozzle plate for an ink jet printhead, the nozzle plate comprising the following layers in the order recited: i) a first monomolecular layer of an organic material having first and second functional groups, the first functional group of the first monomolecular layer being bound to the surface of the nozzle plate, and the second functional group of the first monomolecular layer being bound to a second monomolecular layer, and ii) the second monomolecular layer of an organic material having first and second functional groups, the first functional group of the second monomolecular layer being bound to the second functional group of the first monomolecular layer, and the second functional group of the second monomolecular layer being an anti-wetting group, the second monomolecular layer having been fouled; the method comprising A) unbinding the first functional group of the fouled second monomolecular layer so that it is no longer bound to the second functional group of the first monomolecular layer; B) removing the fouled second monomolecular layer; and C) reattaching a new, unfouled second monomolecular layer to the first monomolecular layer; the new, unfouled second monomolecular layer comprising an organic material having first and second functional groups, the first functional group of the second new, unfouled monomolecular layer being bound to the second functional group of the first monomolecular layer, and the second functional group of the new, unfouled second monomolecular layer being an anti-wetting group.
A nozzle plate for an ink jet printhead, the nozzle plate having the following layers in the order recited: a) a first monomolecular layer of an organic material having first and second functional groups, the first functional group of the first monomolecular layer being bound to the surface of the nozzle plate, and the second functional group of the first monomolecular layer being bound to a second monomolecular layer, and b) the second monomolecular layer of an organic material having first and second functional groups, the first functional group of the second monomolecular layer being bound to the second functional group of the first monomolecular layer, and the second functional group of the second monomolecular layer is an anti-wetting group.
