Abstract
A system comprising a conductive stylus used in conjunction with a capacitance sensitive touch pad, said system providing at least two different signals to an associated computer system. The stylus is a pen-like device having an actuable switch which when actuated substantially increases the capacitive disturbance caused by the conductive stylus on the touch pad. Before actuation, the stylus creates a capacitive disturbance sufficient for circuitry in the touch pad to measure as crossing a first predefined capacitive disturbance threshold when the foam covered conductive stylus tip is brought in contact with the surface of the touch pad. When the switch is actuated, the capacitive disturbance measured by the touch pad increases sufficient to cross a second predefined capacitive disturbance threshold. An associated computer program for drawing on a computer display places a cursor on the display when the first threshold is crossed. The computer program begins drawing on the display beginning at the cursor location when the switch is actuated causing the second threshold to be crossed. Placing a conductive foam cover over the conductive stylus tip results in the measured capacitive disturbance being amplified to thereby increase the magnitude of the capacitive disturbance of the stylus.

6014552 - Low profile eject stylus - Owned by Motorola, Inc. (Schaumburg, IL)

A low profile eject stylus (104) has an outer shell (402) and outer shell (404). The main shell is smaller than the outer shell whereby the main shell can slide within the outer shell. The outer shell has a cross sectional configuration such that it is larger in one direction (A) than it is in another direction (B) orthogonal to the one direction, such that the eject stylus has a low profile. A tip (406) fits within the main shell at an end opposite to the outer shell. The outer shell as assembled over at least a portion of a plunger (408). A spring (412) is coupled to the plunger to bias the stylus into a fully extended position. The stylus can be advantageously employed in a portable device (100) having a housing section (102) including an opening (103) for receipt of the stylus. Guide rails (302, 306) guide the stylus in the housing.

6937231 - Pen-shaped coordinate pointing device - Owned by Wacom Co., Ltd. (Saitama-ken,JP)

In an input pen having a pen-shaped casing, a ferrite core with a coil wound thereon and a ferrite chip are placed opposed to each other with an O-ring therebetween. The ferrite chip has a projection. When the input pen is operated, the projection and the ferrite core are moved closer together. When the ferrite chip is moved closer to the ferrite core during operation, the projection is placed substantially close to the ferrite core. Therefore, high responsivity is ensured without moving the ferrite chip into the coil, and there is no need to form an opening or a cavity in the ferrite core.

6727439 - Pressure sensitive pen - Owned by Aiptek International Inc. (Hsin-Chu,TW)

A pressure sensitive pen is provided. The pressure sensitive pen comprises a core body, an elastic element, a first magnetic body having one coil formed of at least a wire wound around, a second magnetic body, a sliding member, a hollow cylindrical body with an annular element formed therein and an inductance-capacitance type resonant circuit. The resonant circuit is electrically connected with the first magnetic body having the coil wound around. When a force is upward applied on the core body, the force is further applied on the sliding member through the core body such that the sliding member in conjunction with the second magnetic body move upward and make the elastic element deformed, and changing a predetermined distance between the first magnetic body and the second magnetic body, thereby changing an inductance generated by the coil, and the resonance frequency of the resonant circuit is thus changed.

6456991 - Classification method and apparatus based on boosting and pruning of multiple classifiers - Owned by HRL Laboratories, LLC (Malibu, CA)

A boosting and pruning system and method for utilizing a plurality of neural networks, preferably those based on adaptive resonance theory (ART), in order to increase pattern classification accuracy is presented. The method utilizes a plurality of N randomly ordered copies of the input data, which is passed to a plurality of sets of booster networks. Each of the plurality of N randomly ordered copies of the input data is divided into a plurality of portions, preferably with an equal allocation of the data corresponding to each class for which recognition is desired. The plurality of portions is used to train the set of booster networks. The rules generated by the set of booster networks are then pruned in an intra-booster pruning step, which uses a pair-wise Fuzzy AND operation to determine rule overlap and to eliminate rules which are sufficiently similar. This process results in a set of intra-booster pruned booster networks. A similar pruning process is applied in an inter-booster pruning process, which eliminates rules from the intra-booster pruned networks with sufficient overlap. The final, derivative booster network captures the essence of the plurality of sets of booster networks and provides for higher classification accuracy than available using a single network.

In an input pen having a pen-shaped casing, a ferrite core with a coil wound thereon and a ferrite chip are placed opposed to each other via an O-ring.
