Abstract
A digital modulator and digital demodulator with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes, which are designed to modulate or demodulate RZ-coded baseband signals. The digital modulator comprises first to fourth roll-off filters and a first and second inverters connected to the second and fourth roll-off filters. It also comprises a parallel-to-serial converter to successively selects the outputs of the first roll-off filter, third roll-off filter, first inverter, and second inverter. A D/A converter converts the selected digital signal stream into an analog signal. The roll-off filters and inverters operate at a predetermined clock frequency, while the parallel-to-serial converter and the D/A converter work at a frequency four times the predetermined clock frequency. The digital demodulator reverses the above modulation process to reproduce the baseband signals.

An RF signal received from an antenna is supplied to an RF portion. The RF portion mixes down the RF signal to an IF signal. An RSSI circuit of an automatic gain controlling circuit portion converts the received RF signal into a DC component and detects the electric field intensity of the received signal. A level determining unit has two threshold values of the input level. The level determining unit controls the variable amount of a gain varying unit corresponding to the input level. An averaging process circuit averages a digital signal in a predetermined time period T and controls the variable amount of the gain varying unit 3 so that the average value converges at a digital value with n bits that represent a predetermined amplitude level. A BB portion demodulates the digital signal that has been modulated on the transmitting side to original information.

6987953 - Digital transmitter and method - Owned by Nortel Networks Limited (St. Laurent,CA)

A transmitter and method is provided for digitally upconverting a baseband digital signal to a modulated intermediate frequency (IF) digital signal and sigma-delta modulating the IF digital signal. The baseband digital signal is split into N phases, as can be accomplished using a polyphase interpolation technique (polyphase filter), and modulated. The modulated N phases are not recombined and each phase is further modulated, as can be accomplished using a digital-to-digital sigma-delta modulator that generates digital output signals at the same rate. A high speed digital multiplexer multiplexes the digital output signals into a single bit stream at a higher rate for subsequent power amplification and RF transmission.

6973141 - Flexible multimode QAM modulator - Owned by Wideband Semiconductors, Inc. (Mountain View, CA)

A method of baseband/passband digital modulation for a data transmission system wherein a plurality of data symbols is transmitted over a transmission channel at a symbol rate. The method comprises the following steps: (1) generating a plurality of I and Q components of symbols by mapping an input bit stream comprising a plurality of digital codewords into a QAM constellation; (2) selecting a passband or a baseband mode; and (3) generating an analog output signal in the passband or baseband mode. The step of selecting the passband or the baseband mode depends on the complexity of QAM constellation. If QAM constellation includes less than 64 QAM plant points, the passband mode is selected, and if QAM constellation includes more than 64 QAM plant points, the baseband mode is selected. If the QAM constellation includes less than 64 QAM plant points, initially selecting the passband mode until a D/A conversion speed reaches a maximum passband conversion speed, and until an output symbol rate reaches a maximum passband symbol output rate, and subsequently switching to the baseband mode in order to double the maximum passband conversion speed and to double the maximum passband symbol output rate.

7136430 - Digital receiver and method - Owned by Nortel Networks Limited (St. Laurent,CA)

A receiver and method is provided for sigma-delta converting an RF signal to a digital signal and downconverting to a digital baseband signal. The RF signal is split into N phases, as can be accomplished using a sample and hold circuit, and each phase is digitized, as can be accomplished using an analog-to-digital (A/D) sigma-delta converter. Polyphase decimation techniques and demodulation are applied to the phased signals to generate a demodulated digital signal. The demodulated digital signal is further downconverted to the appropriate baseband signal.
