A user's movements are detected by a capacitive system having one or more conductors. The output from the conductors is amplified and compared to a table of stored output. Thus, the device can eliminate the need to touch a control surface. The control surface such as a computer mouse could be eliminated in favor of merely sensing a user's hand movement. Likewise, the array of conductors could be placed in a panel that could be mounted on a wall. Such panels could be used in a factory to sense the movement of workers or a machinery. Indeed, the movements could be analyzed and warnings sounded if a collision is predicted.
The method obtains a signature (S) of a gesture produced in free space, e.g. for producing gesture recognition commands, by deriving at least one time-evolving signal representative of muscular activity involved in producing the gesture and determining at least one value of a parameter yielded by that signal. The method comprises the steps of: time dividing the time-evolving signal (14) into sub-frames (SF1, SF2, . . . ), and for at least one sub-frame: determining at least one parameter value (Psfi) yielded by the signal over at least a part of that sub-frame, and expressing said parameter value as a component of a vector (S) along a dimension thereof specifically allocated to that sub-frame (SFi), the resultant vector yielding the signature (S) of said gesture. The invention also relates to an apparatus producing such signatures and commands by gesture recognition.
An object of the present invention is to provide a method of segmenting hand gestures which automatically segments hand gestures to be detected into words or apprehensible units structured by a plurality of words when recognizing the hand gestures without the user's presentation where to segment. Transition feature data in which a feature of a transition gesture being not observed during a gesture representing a word but is described when transiting from a gesture to another is previously stored. Thereafter, a motion of image corresponding to the part of body in which the transition gesture is observed is detected (step S106), the detected motion of image is compared with the transition feature data (step S107), and a time position where the transition gesture is observed is determined so as to segment the hand gestures (step S108).
A video poker gaming machine is described where, after initially dealing five cards to a player, the machine displays a sixth card to replace a discarded card by the player. In one embodiment, the sixth card automatically replaces the leftmost discarded card. In another embodiment, the sixth card can replace any of the discarded cards.
A method is provided for controlling a handheld computing device through the use of gesture commands. A gesture command corresponds to a pattern of movement of the handheld device that is measured as a function of time F(t), where t.sub.s is a start time and t.sub.f is a finish time such that the interval of time is t.sub.f minus t.sub.s. The gesture command further corresponds to angular orientations of the handheld device. The method comprises the steps of: measuring movement of the device over an interval of time with a motion sensor mounted to the device, the measuring producing a signal; analyzing the signal measured over the interval of time to determine a gesture command that corresponds to the movement of the device; and processing the gesture command to control the handheld computing device. To enable use of different gesture commands, the method includes a comparison of the signal to a catalog of gesture commands to determine a particular gesture command.
An electronic reading system is disclosed which allows users to download books and other types of content to a hand-held reader device for viewing. Using software which runs on a personal computer (PC), the user can download titles from Internet sites to the PC. Titles are then automatically transferred to the device when the device is placed in a cradle which is connected to the PC. Using the device's touch-sensitive display and graphical user interface, the user can access various software-implemented features associated with the display and management of the content. One feature is a user-definable hotkey that can be "dragged and dropped" onto a menu item to create a shortcut to that item. Another feature allows the user to tap twice on a displayed word to cause the device to look the word up in a prespecified or default reference title, such as a dictionary or an encyclopedia. Another feature allows the user to block a passage on the touch-sensitive display and then specify one or more destinations (email addresses, file folders, fax numbers, printers, etc.) for routing the passage; when the device is subsequently placed in the cradle, the passage is automatically retrieved by the PC and routed to the specified destination(s). The device also implements a user interface feature for allowing the user to rapidly and conveniently adjust the orientation of the displayed title.
