A mobile station for measuring signal strength of a set of channels includes a synthesizer, a controller and a transceiver. During an idle period, the controller loads channel data of the set of channels contained into a memory block in the synthesizer. The synthesizer automatically selects the channel data for each channel stored in the memory block and generates a frequency signal corresponding to the selected channel data. The transceiver measures the signal strength data of the selected channel data and stores the signal strength data in a buffer. Once the signal strength data for the entire set of channels has been measured and stored in the buffer, the transceiver transmits the signal strength data to the controller. The set of channels may include a set of channels from a neighbor cell list or measurement order transmitted by the radio base station. The set of channels may also include a set of control channels that the mobile station measures at power-up.
This invention relates to a method and apparatus for selecting carriers to be measured by a subscriber unit (301,303, 501). The subscriber unit (301, 303, 501) is served by a communication system and is operable to measure carriers in a frequency band, which typically belongs to a different communication system. The apparatus comprises a performance processor (329) for determining a measuring performance characteristic of the subscriber unit (301, 303, 501) related to the measurement performance of the subscriber unit (301, 303, 501) when measuring in the frequency band. The apparatus furthermore comprises a carrier subset selector (331) for selecting a subset of carriers in the frequency band to be measured by the subscriber unit. The subset of carriers is selected dependent on the measuring performance characteristic. The invention is applicable to dual 2nd and 3rd generation cellular communication systems such as GSM/UMTS.
The invention is a method of measuring transfer functions of a physical system using a wideband excitation signal by exciting the system with a low-power, wide band input signal that has a rich frequency content over a wide band and using a stochastic process to derive a system transfer function over the excitation signal bandwidth.
A receivable service is selected from each ensemble of a digital broadcast, and the error rate of the selected service is measured. Only a service belonging to an ensemble containing a service which satisfies a predetermined reference value is searched and preset. A service belonging to an ensemble containing a service with a low error rate is searched and preset, with priority over a service belonging to an ensemble containing a service with a high error rate. The reception level of a receivable service may be used instead of the error rate as the selection reference for processing.
A device for measuring the received signal strength at an Earth station antenna has the capability to provide an accurate pointing indication when the frequency bands and other key characteristics of the satellite signals are not uniform over the coverage area. The device has an input port, a plurality of passive or active signal filters, a filter selector and an output port. The device may further contain a signal amplifier with automatic or manual gain control. A plurality of filters is provided which may be coupled singularly or in combination between the input port and the output port. Each filter or combination of filters is associated with a particular geographic area and capable of allowing the satellite signal assigned to that geographic area to pass while attenuating or blocking other signals, noise and interference. The filter selector is used to connect the appropriate filter or combination of filters between the input port and the output port. A signal amplifier with manual or automatic gain control may be included to provide an output signal at the desired signal level. The output port may be connected to a power measuring unit, antenna pointing meter or other similar device to provide an accurate antenna pointing indication in the particular geographic area corresponding to the filter or filter combination selected.
A portable subscriber unit (122) provides (402) communications for a user, and monitors (404) a parameter indicative of communication quality during the communications. The portable subscriber unit compares (406) the parameter with a predetermined threshold; and when the communication quality deteriorates (408) such that the parameter reaches the predetermined threshold, the portable subscriber unit determines (412) geographic coordinates corresponding to the location at which the communication difficulty occurred, and adds (414) a communication difficulty report identifying the parameter and the geographic coordinates to a record of communication difficulty reports stored in the portable subscriber unit. When the portable subscriber unit receives (502) a request for the record of communication difficulty reports from a fixed portion (102) of a two-way wireless communication system, the portable subscriber unit communicates (504) the record of communication difficulty reports to the fixed portion.
