A pharmaceutical, orally applicable composition is described, whereby the solid composition contains at least one active ingredient, at least one disintegrant, as well as at least one usual pharmaceutical additional ingredient. Furthermore said composition contains at least one ingredient that accelerates the decomposition of said composition in the mouth or in a liquid, whereby said ingredient is a water-soluble amino acid, a water-soluble amino acid derivative and/or a water-soluble amino acid salt.
A process for producing an Echinacea powder having an increased amount of the cichoric acid present in the harvested Echinacea plant material. The process includes the following steps: 1) milling the harvested Echinacea plant material to reduce the particle size, 2) blanching the milled plant material, 3) recovering the juice from the blanched material, 4) concentrating the juice to have at least about a 20% soluble solids content, and 5) drying the juice to produce the Echinacea powder having a moisture content of less than about 8%. The blanching step enhances the juice recovery from the Echinacea plant material. The Echinacea powder can be tableted or combined with other nutrients in a dry supplement form.
A coated tablet and process for making the same is provided. A molten composition comprising at least 50 weight percent of a thermoplastic material having a melting point of less than about 120.degree. C. is applied to the tablet, and the molten composition is solidified into a protective coating. If desired, one or more outer coatings may be applied over the protective coating.
A film coating composition suitable for use in coating pharmaceutical formulations to provide modified release comprising a dispersion which includes: a) an acrylic polymer, b) a vinyl acetate polymer, and c) a water-containing liquid. The film coat is useful for the achievement of modified release from pharmaceutical formulations such as tablets, pellets, etc.

A method of producing a processed kava product involves using an extraction solvent, such as liquid CO.sub.2, to preferentially extract different kavalactones from the source material at different rates. By controlling the extraction parameters and stopping the extraction before all of the kavalactones have been extracted or allowing the extracted kavalactones to be preferentially precipitated in one or more collection environments, a processed kava product can be produced that has a kavalactone distribution profile that can differ substantially from that of the source material. As a result, roots from a less desirable kava cultivar can be used to produce a processed kava product which has a kavalactone distribution profile that is similar to that of a highly desired cultivar. The kava paste can be further processed to produce a dry flowable powder suitable for use in, e.g., a tableting formula. A rapid dissolve tablet formulation for use in the delivery of kavalactones and other botanicals is also disclosed.
