Abstract
A method and apparatus for connecting side-by-side recumbent bicycles to form a quadracycle. The apparatus includes a pair of recumbent bicycles having front wheels and rear wheels. The bicycles have substantially rigid frame members supporting the front wheels and the rear wheels, and the frame members are aligned substantially upright and parallel. The apparatus also includes a single rigid connecting member located between the frame members and attached thereto such that substantially upright planes defined by the frame members always remain substantially parallel. The connecting member has an attachment means to at least one of the frame members such that the frame member rotates relative to the connecting member within a substantially upright plane about the attachment means in order to maintain the front wheels and the rear wheels in contact with an uneven road surface as the quadracycle moves over it.

6666468 - Convertible bicycle

A device for connecting two bicycles to one another in a side-by-side relationship allows two riders to simultaneously use the bicycle and not have the view blocked by a rider directly in front of them. A steering bar insures that the front wheels of both bicycles are always pointed in the same direction so that, when connected, the joined bicycles both head in the same direction. Additional bars are connected between the two bicycles to provide a rigid connection between the bicycles. The rigid connection insures that both bicycles travel at the same speed. If one rider causes one of the bicycles to move faster, the acceleration and speed of the first bicycle will be transferred to the second bicycle due to the rigid connection. For all intents and purposes, when joined, the two bicycles act as a single vehicle. The connection between the bicycles can be easily disassembled so that each bicycle can be used separately. The flexibility of using both bicycles separately or together is advantageous in such situations as bicycle rentals. Bicycles can be joined or separated as the demand dictates.

6554308 - Recumbent vehicle & apparatus for forming same - Owned by Blackbird Designs Inc. (Burnsville, MN)

A recumbent vehicle including parallel paired recumbent bicycles operatively and reversibly joined by a bracing assembly having less than four brace members, is provided. The parallel paired recumbent bicycles are easily separable, without the need for tools, for individual riding. A conversion kit for reversibly uniting a pair of recumbent bicycles so as to form a recumbent quad is similarly provided. The kit generally includes a bracing assembly including a pair of braces, and brackets adapted to reversibly receive portions of the braces therein. One of the brackets is a front bracket with another of the brackets being a rear bracket. The front bracket is supported by a front triangle of a diamond frame of the recumbent bicycle, with the rear bracket being supported by a rear triangle of the diamond frame.
