Abstract
A stepless ratchet one way clutch mechanism, which provides an improved ratchet tool, is disclosed. A drive head is rotatably fitted into a cylindrical recess in a wrench housing. The drive head includes a partially triangular shape with three flat sides equally spaced around its circumference. A latch is positioned between each flat side and the internal wall of the recess. A selector mechanism provides a rotational bias to the three latches about the rotational axis of the drive head. The drive head may rotate in the wrench in the same direction that the selector is turned. The drive head is prevented from rotating in the opposite direction by wedging the latches between the drive head and the cylindrical internal wall of the recess. The selector bias may be switched either way. When the bias is switched, the latches rotate slightly about the drive head and corners of the drive head contact spaced apart segments of each latch. The selector bias originates within a recess of the drive head while a thin disk links the bias to the latches. A flange of the drive head securely holds the drive head in position and prevents wobble of the drive head. A friction surface is at the latch and internal wall interface. The friction surface may include a "V" groove and rib, a hard, textured surface, or very fine teeth and splines.

7207245 - Screw-locking wrench - Owned by United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Washington, DC) N/A

A tool comprises a first handle and a second handle, each handle extending from a gripping end portion to a working end portion, the first handle having first screw threads disposed circumferentially about an inner portion of a first through-hole at the working end portion thereof, the second handle having second screw threads disposed circumferentially about an inner portion of a second through-hole at the working end portion thereof, the first and second respective through-holes being disposed concentrically about a common axis of the working end portions. First and second screw locks preferably are disposed concentrically with the first and second respective through-holes, the first screw lock having a plurality of locking/unlocking screw threads for engaging the first screw threads of the first handle, the second screw lock having a plurality of locking/unlocking screw threads for engaging the second screw threads of the second handle. A locking clutch drive, disposed concentrically with the first and second respective through-holes, engages the first screw lock and the second screw lock. The first handle and the second handle are selectively operable at their gripping end portions by a user using a single hand to activate the first and second screw locks to lock the locking clutch drive for either clockwise rotation about the common axis, or counter-clockwise rotation about the common axis, or to release the locking clutch drive so that the handles can be rotated together about the common axis either the clockwise or counter-clockwise direction without rotation of the locking clutch drive.

6736766 - Dynamic tensioner incorporating stepless ratchet device

A rotational drive device that provides both variable levels of adjustable rotational resistance and also selective direction in which the resistance acts. The device has two mutually rotatable members each having a grasping handle. One member has a shaft serving as an axle for rotatably supporting the second member. A nut threads to the end of the shaft. When tightened, the nut imparts axially compressive forces urging the two rotatable members towards one another. The base rotatable member has a ramped member facing a corresponding opposed ramped member rotatably supported on the shaft. When the ramped members are rotated relative to one another, overall axial length of the base member is adjusted. This adjustment selectively modifies resistance to rotation of the rotatable members. A clutch device selectively transmits resistance forces when one rotatable member is rotated relative to the other in a first direction, in a second direction, and in both directions. When one direction is selected, the two members rotate with minimal resistance. The clutch has curved cam surfaces which bind in a smooth, stepless manner without causing chattering and vibration typical of pawl ratchets.

6345436 - Combination torque tool and method of adjusting valves and injectors

A valve adjusting and injector preload tool is provided for an internal combustion engine having a valve opening member with a male threaded member operatively and adjustably contacting the valve. The tool includes a first member engagable with the threaded member for rotating the threaded member towards or away from the valve. There is a knob for rotating the first member in a first rotational direction so the male threaded member moves towards the valve and for rotating the first member in a second rotational direction so the male threaded member moves away from the valve. There is a clutch for stopping movement of the first member, as the male threaded member moves towards the valve, when the male threaded member operatively contacts the valve and takes up play between the valve opening member and the valve. There is a scale for measuring a predetermined amount of rotation of the threaded member, as the threaded member is rotated in the second rotational direction away from the valve, after the male threaded member operatively contacts the valve, and thereby setting a specified amount of play between the valve opening member and the valve. The method involves loosening any lock nut on the male threaded member. The male threaded member is rotated in a first rotational direction towards the valve until the male threaded member operatively contacts the valve. The male threaded member is then rotated in the opposite rotational direction for a specified angle of rotation related to the pitch of the male threaded member, such that a specified clearance is set between the threaded member and the valve.
