Disclosed is a set of golf clubs. The clubs are divided into at least a first group and at least a second group of golf clubs. The first group desirably comprises a plurality of club heads each having a main body of low density metallic material. The second group of golf clubs desirably comprises a plurality of club heads each having a main body of higher density metallic material than the density of the metallic material of the main body of each of the heads of the first group. The first group of clubs desirably comprises lower numbered clubs than the second group of clubs.
As the club number increases so that the loft angle is larger, the center-of-gravity height HG of each head becomes larger, and the center-of-gravity depth ZG thereof becomes smaller. Each head is hollow, and a face portion becomes thicker in its lower portion. The back bottom thickness T is smaller in an iron shorter in club length.
In an iron club set, the lie angle of each iron club in an iron club set is selected to be 61 degrees or larger. The lie angles of the iron clubs are set at a fixed value for every type of the iron clubs including a short iron to a long iron or progressively increase in angle value from the short iron to the long iron. Further, a ratio (L/H) of the minimum height (L) of the face at the heel to the maximum height (H) of the face of the club head, progressively increase in value in going to the long irons.
A golf club head (11) has an ellipsoid of inertia (12) with its center at a center of gravity G. When the ellipsoid of inertia (12) is virtually cut with a plane passing through the center of gravity of the golf club head (11) and being parallel to a face surface (11f), a major axis of a plane ellipse (13) appearing on its cut surface forms an angle of .theta. with an intersecting line (15) of the cut surface and a ground surface (16). The major axis extends upward and away from the ground surface (16) as it approaches a toe part (11t). The angle .theta. is not smaller than 0.5.degree. and not larger than 9.5.degree.. An aspect ratio a/b defined by a ratio of the length a of the major axis (13d) to the length b of a minor axis (13e) of the plane ellipse (13) is not smaller than 1 and not larger than 4.
A golf club head includes a golf club head body and a weight member mounted in a recession of the golf club head body. The weight member includes at least one solder channel for receiving solderable filler. The weight member is mounted in the recession of the golf club head body before a brazing process for bonding the weight member with the golf club head body. During the brazing process, the solderable filler is melted and fills a gap between the weight member and walls delimiting the recession of the golf club head body to thereby increasing bonding strength between the weight member and the walls delimiting the recession of the golf club head body.
The use of liquid phase sintering for weighting of a golf club head is disclosed herein. The preferred weighting material is a multiple component material that includes a high-density component, a binding component and an anti-oxidizing component. A preferred multiple component material includes tungsten, copper and chromium. The liquid phase sintering process is performed in an open air environment at standard atmospheric conditions.
