The pyrazoles and pyzazolopyrimidines of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and A are as defined herein, have corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) antagonist activity. As such, they are effective in the treatment of a wide range of diseases including stress-related illnesses.

No. 08/448,529, filed on Jun. 14, 1995, pending, which is a national stage application filed pursuant to 35 U.S.C. .sctn.371 of PCT International Application No. PCT/US93/10359, filed Nov. 3, 1993, which is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 07/992,225, filed Dec. 17, 1992, now abandoned.

This invention relates to the use of pyrazole derivatives of the formula ##STR1## and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and solvates thereof, in the manufacture of a reverse transcriptase inhibitor or modulator, to certain novel such pyrazole derivatives and to processes for the preparation of and compositions containing such novel derivatives.
