A superemissive combustion device of this invention comprises a porous distributive layer and an apparatus for delivering a fuel/oxidizer mixture to an upstream face of the porous distributive layer. A superemissive advanced emissive matrix in is disposed within an active flame zone downstream from the porous distributive layer. The emissive matrix is in the form of a three dimensional matrix of radiating bodies that is optically thin to electromagnetic radiation. The emissive matrix is either formed from or includes a coating of a superemissive material that is selected to emit photons within a predetermined wavelength range when thermally stimulated. The emitted photons are received by one or more photovoltaic cells disposed adjacent the matrix.
RELATION TO COPENDING APPLICATION
This patent application is a continuation-in-part application of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 08/482,217 filed on Jun. 7, 1995.
An infrared irradiating heater having a radiating body with a housing comprised of a ceramic and having a planar radiating surface, a multiplicity of substantially flame-free passages extending perpendicular to the surface and opening at the surface, and a rear surface, the passages extending to the rear surface, the passages having lengths less than 300 mm, the total cross sectional area of the passages at the planar radiating surface being in a ratio to the area thereof in excess of 50%, and the passages having length to maximum diameter ratios of at least 5. A burner plate spaced from the rear surface defines a combustion chamber with it so that the combustion is effected substantially only in this combustion chamber and the passages are free from flame and serve as radiator surfaces.
A steam generating boiler having a matrix means for reducing combustion volume. Matrix means is placed in the combustion furnace of a steam generating boiler, preferably downstream of fuel and oxidant stream. Matrix means produces a shorter combustion envelope than that of a conventional boiler, allowing for reduced volume steam generating boilers.
