A system and method for enabling the use of popular serial networking application software to transmit PPP packet data via a CDMA type subscriber device to a network such as the internet. One or more reserved phone numbers is stored in memory within the subscriber device. The networking application is provided a telephone number to be dialed in order to make a connection to the internet. The telephone number provided to the networking application is compared to the stored reserved telephone numbers. If there is a match, the subscriber device transmits a CONNECT signal back to the networking application and initiates a packet data call. If there is no match, the subscriber device initiates an asynchronous data call.
A system and method for selecting from a plurality of data service options in a wireless communication network is presented. The system includes a terminal device for originating a call and for transmitting and receiving data in accordance with a selected data service option. The terminal device includes a dialing interface for inputting a sequence of one or more symbols representing a dial command string for originating the call. The input symbol sequence includes information indicating the selection of a data service option. The system also includes a communication device, coupled to the terminal device, for receiving the dial command string from the terminal device, for storing a plurality of pre-determined symbol sequences including standard telephone numbers and reserved telephone number sequences representing different data service options, and for comparing the contents of the dial command string with the stored pre-determined symbol sequences. The communications device operates in accordance with the selected data service option when the communication device determines that the contents of the dial command string matches one of the reserved telephone number sequences.
A system and method for selecting from a plurality of data service options in a wireless communication system having mobile data service support. The system comprises a terminal device includes a terminal device for originating a call and transmitting and receiving data in accordance with a selected data service option. The terminal device includes a communications interface for inputting a sequence of one or more alpha-numeric characters representing an AT dial command string in order to originate the call and for including information that indicates the selected data service option. The system also includes a communication device, coupled to the terminal device, for interfacing with the wireless communication system and for sending signaling messages to the terminal device. The communication device receives the AT dial command string from the terminal device and examines the contents of the received AT dial command string. The communication device compares the contents of said AT dial command string with stored predetermined alpha-numeric character sequences. These character sequences include standard telephone numbers and reserved telephone numbers representing different data service options. The communication device determines whether a match exists between the inputted sequence and the stored reserved telephone numbers. If a match does exist, the communication device signals the terminal device to transmit data in accordance with the selected data service option indicated by the reserved telephone number.
A data communication system and data communication operating method capable of providing a asynchronous data communication service to a public switching telephone network, X.25 network, and Internet by extensively applying a packet assembler deassembler (PAD) function to an interworking function device provided in a code division multiple access (CDMA) type data communication system. If a certain mobile station requests the asynchronous data service, the data communication system analyzes the condition of terminating information inputted by a user of the mobile station, and selectively connects the mobile station to a public switching telephone network, X.25 network, and Internet according to the result of analysis.
A method and system for dynamic soft handoff resource allocation in a wireless communications network includes determining a wireless path characteristic individually for each path of a macro diversity connection between a mobile device and a plurality of wireless sites. Wireless resources are allocated for the macro diversity connection between the mobile device and the wireless sites based on the wireless path characteristic. The wireless path characteristic includes a location-based characteristic, a congestion-based characteristic, a subscriber-based characteristic and/or a performance-based characteristic.
