A nail lacquer effective for the treatment or prevention of fungal infections, such as, onychomycosis, includes fungicidally effective amount of ciclopirox, econazole, or other antifungal agent in a clear, stable, film-forming lacquer vehicle which includes a water-insoluble film-forming polymer; 2-n-nonyl-1,3-dioxolane or similar penetration enhancer; and volatile solvent. A plasticizer for the film-forming polymer which is also compatible with the other components may be included although the preferred penetration enhancers may also function as plasticizer. The composition, when applied to the nails provides a hard, clear, water-resistant film containing the antifungal agent. The film is resistant to multiple washings and is effective in the treatment of onychomycosis.
A method of treating a patient having a fungal infection comprises administering an effective fungal infection treatment amount of an antiviral agent, such as valacyclovir, to eliminate the symptoms of the fungal infection.
Cosmetic and/or therapeutic film former compositions for a topical use and for optional delivery of active ingredients to the skin are provided. More particularly, film forming compositions are provided, containing 1 to 50 wt % polyurethane, preferably polyurethane-1; at least 0.01 wt %, but less than 2.0 wt %, cellulose and 0.05 to 5.0 wt % magnesium aluminum silicate; wherein the film forming composition forms a uniform mist when discharged from a spray bottle or pump sprayer. A method for applying a film forming composition to an individual's skin is also provided including spraying the film forming composition onto the skin, wherein the film forming composition contains 1 to 50 wt % polyurethane; at least 0.01 wt %, but less than 2.0 wt %, cellulose and 0.05 to 5.0 wt % magnesium aluminum silicate; and wherein the film forming composition forms a uniform mist when sprayed.
A method of applying a cosmetic nail lacquer or polish to a nail of an animal is disclosed. The method comprises applying a polyurea composition to the nail. Such nail composition is selected from a reaction solution, a stabilized reaction solution, a blocked reaction solution or a mixture of any of the foregoing solution.
Topically applicable dermatological/cosmetic compositions suited for ungual/peri-ungual administration for the treatment of a variety of pathologies, including fungal pathologies, such as onychomycosis, contain (a) at least one biologically active agent (e.g., antifungal) and (b) at least two of the pro-penetrating agents selected from the group consisting of urea, an organic acid and an ethoxydiglycol, the at least two-pro-penetrating agents respectively being present in effective amounts as to synergistically improve the ungual/peri-ungual bioavailability of the at least one biologically active agent.
The present invention is a topical skin preparation for treatment of fungal infections of the skin and nails. The preparation comprises triacetin in combination with an antifungal agent. In a preferred form, the preparation further comprises, a fatty acid source such as a fish oil. In a preferred embodiment, cod liver oil and tolnaftate are used in combination with triacetin. The concentrations of these constituents are 96.0-99.0% concentration triacetin, 0.5-3.0% concentration tolnaftate and 0.5-1.0% concentration cod liver oil, in one preferred embodiment. Other compounds, such as ethyl alcohol, amino acids such as n-acetylcysteine, and herbal additives may also be added to the preparation. Further, other antifungal agents such as nystatin, clortimazole, econazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, solconazole, oxiconizole, naftifine, terbinafine, and butenafine, for example, may be substituted for the antifungal agent tolnaftate. The preparation of the present invention is effective in treating immune compromised patients and those with diabetes, as well as relatively healthy persons.
