A hydraulic percussion drill includes a piston hammer disposed in a cylinder for reciprocating movement in response to pressure fluid acting continuously on one transverse face of the piston hammer and in response to valving of pressure fluid alternately to an opposed piston face of the piston hammer by a tubular sleeve valve disposed around the piston hammer. The drill includes a percussion bit configured to have a face portion disposed at an acute angle with respect to a plane normal to the bit and the drill central axis. Cooperating spiral splines on the bit and a bit chuck provide for directional drilling using a method which includes causing the bit to receive impact blows without rotating the cylinder housing to initiate a deviated drillhole.

A bit retainer system is disclosed. The bit retainer system includes a bit having a head and a shank, a driver sub disposed around the shank of the bit and adapted to engage a hammer case, a bit retainer disposed around the shank of the bit and abutting an upper end of the driver sub, and a secondary retainer disposed around the bit retainer.
A pressure fluid actuated downhole percussion tool includes a reciprocating piston hammer with differential transverse pressure surfaces cooperable with a cylinder housing, a guide sleeve and a bit carried exhaust tube to form opposed pressure fluid chambers to which pressure fluid may be conducted to deliver repeated impact blows to a bit having circumferentially spaced bosses and replaceable cutting inserts. The bit is drivenly connected to the tool by plural drive pins supported in circumferentially spaced grooves in the bit shank and in a removable sub supported by the tool housing. Improved earth penetration performance is realized utilizing a claw bit with a pressure fluid actuated percussion tool providing rotation as well as selective deliverance of impact blows through the bit.
