A club head for a golf putter includes a bottom surface, a toe, a heel opposite the toe and a ball striking side on one side of the club head. The ball striking side extends between the toe and the heel and has a center disposed between the heel and the toe. A face insert is carried by a portion of the club head and defines at least part of a ball striking surface on the ball striking side of the club head. The face insert is adapted to absorb energy near the center of the ball striking side so as to produce a coefficient of restitution that is substantially similar and consistent over a majority of the ball striking surface. The face insert deadens the ball striking side at or near the center of the club head so that the distance of putts, whether struck near the center or whether mis-hit and struck closer to the heel or toe, are substantially the same.
A golf putter has a clubhead that includes a ball striking surface defined by a curved concave surface over which a coating material has been applied. The outer surface of the coating material is substantially flat. The coating material is selected according to desired functional characteristics and hardness.
A method and apparatus for beneficially controlling the impact between a club head and a golf ball are described. A golf club head (such as on a driver, iron, or putter) has a body and a face mechanically supported thereon, wherein the face and body are elastically tailored to create beneficial face motion and deformation at impact. The tailored clubhead compliance is shown to influence impact properties and resulting ball parameters such as speed, direction and spin rates resulting from the impact event between the face of the club and the golf ball. Several embodiments are presented for controlling ball spin through design of the elastic and dynamic response of the face and body under impact loading.
Ball striking devices, such as golf club heads (including putter heads), have a high moment of inertia about their center, to help prevent twisting and mis-hits, particularly when the ball striking device hits the ball at a somewhat off-center position. The ball striking head of the ball striking device may be structured and/or weighted (optionally with separately attachable weight elements) to have a moment of inertia about a center of the ball striking surface of at least 10,000 g-cm.sup.2, and in some examples, the moment of inertia may be at least 11,000 g-cm.sup.2, or even at least 12,000 g-cm.sup.2. In some examples, the moment of inertia may be at least 20,000 g-cm.sup.2, or even at least 25,000 g-cm.sup.2 or at least 28,000 g-cm.sup.2.
A golf equipment fitting system that uses advanced technology to not only objectively identify the optimum equipment for the golfer, but to also identify and help correct swing flaws so that the golfer can achieve optimum performance on the golf course. Thus, in one embodiment, golf fitting includes collecting data related to the golfer's swing and determining if the golfer's swing technique should be modified based at least in part on the collected swing data. When it is determined that the golfer's swing technique should be modified, then providing swing instruction to the golfer. When, however, it is determined that the golfer's swing technique is fine, then collecting data related to how the golfer's swing launches a golf ball. Finally, golf equipment, e.g., golf clubs, can be specified based on the collected swing data and launch data.
A golf club head (42) having a delta of the coefficient of restitution between a geometric face center of the face (72) and a location (806) 0.5 inch sole-ward from the face center that is less than 0.065. The golf club head (42) preferably has a volume ranging from 420 cubic centimeters to 470 cubic centimeters. The golf club head (42) preferably has a moment of inertia about the Izz axis through the center of gravity of the golf club head greater than 4000 grams-centimeters squared, and a moment of inertia about the Ixx axis through the center of gravity of the golf club head greater than 3000 grams-centimeters squared.
