A data storage disk cartridge having a dual housing structure includes an inner housing that contains a disk, and an outer housing that contains the inner housing. The inner housing is at least partially removable from the outer housing for insertion into a disk drive. The outer housing remains external to the disk drive, however, except for a portion that is inserted into the drive to provide a docking channel for retraction of the inner housing. A shutter on the inner housing covers a portion of the disk, but is manipulable by the disk drive to uncover the disk and allow drive access. The dual housing structure of the cartridge is capable of significantly improving disk and drive reliability, particularly for recording applications that require higher areal recording densities, such as near field optical recording. In particular, the disk cartridge reduces the accumulation of debris on the disk and drive components. The dual-housing disk cartridge provides a system of partially redundant barriers that significantly reduce the possibility of debris accumulation. The barriers form a hierarchy of cleanliness that stands between the outside environment and the disk and drive components. Consequently, in a preferred mode, the disk is never exposed to the outside environment. The reduced amounts of debris contribute to more consistent optical and mechanical performance of the disk and drive, and thereby enhance data storage reliability.
This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. application Ser. No. 08/846,916, filed Apr. 29, 1997, now U.S. Pat. No. 6,243,350, the content of which is incorporated herein by reference.
A server system and a vibration-free extractable hard disc drive assembly thereof. The server system includes a chassis and the vibration-free hard disc drive assembly. The assembly is disposed in the chassis in an extractable manner. The vibration-free hard disc drive assembly includes a tray, a vibration-absorbing pad, and a hard disc drive. The tray is disposed in the chassis in an extractable manner. The vibration-absorbing pad is disposed on the tray. The hard disc drive is disposed on the tray via the vibration-absorbing pad. Thus, external vibration transmitted to the tray is reduced by the vibration-absorbing pad, limiting the vibration transmitted to the hard disc drive; therefore, the vibration applied to the hard disc drive is reduced.
A disk cartridge which allows for the user to know what contents are recorded in which disk cartridge without the need of reproducing the disk cartridge, a method of manufacturing the same and a recording/reproducing system using the same have been provided, in which the disk cartridge is accomplished by incorporating the optical disk in a case, a recording surface of the optical disk is comprised of an annular inner area, a clamping area, a transition area, an information recording area and a rim area, which are arranged from inside to outside in radial directions of the optical disk, and disk cartridge identification information is recorded in the transition area of the optical disk, and also the disk cartridge identification information recorded in the optical disk is provided discernibly from outside the case.
An apparatus includes a removable cartridge having an information storage medium, and having a housing with the information storage medium movably supported therein. The housing is configured so that, if electrostatic charge is present on an exterior surface of the housing, the information storage medium will be substantially free of induced charge.
A removable magnetic data storage cartridges incorporates antiferromagnetically coupled (AFC) media and may be used with a data drive to push the capacity point of removable hard platter based magnetic storage to 35 GB for a single platter 2.5'' form factor product. The removable magnetic data storage cartridges incorporating AFC media represents an equivalent increase in the areal density of removable magnetic data storage cartridges on the order of 13.times..
A data storage cartridge including a housing, a door, and a hard drive. The housing defines an access window. The door is coupled to the housing and configured to selectively cover the access window. The hard drive is maintained within the housing and adapted to be accessed from a point external to the data storage cartridge via the access window.
