A method for preventing or treating drug dependence comprising administering to a human in need thereof a pharmaceutically effective amount of a 1,4-(diphenylalkyl)piperazine compound represented by the following formula [I] or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R.sup.1 is lower alkoxy; R.sup.2 is lower alkoxy; A is lower alkylene and B is lower alkylene; ##STR1##
