A mattress is provided for use with a bed deck having a recess. The mattress includes a mattress section configured to define a patient rest surface and a mattress section support configured to support the mattress section.
This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09/018,542, filed Feb. 4, 1998, now U.S. Pat. No. 6,163,903 the disclosure of which is expressly incorporated herein by reference, which is a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 08/511,711, filed Aug. 4, 1995, now U.S. Pat. The present invention encompasses a mattress (20) for a variable width bed. The mattress (20) has a top section (40) positioned on a base section (50, 60) with the top section (40) having a width greater than the width of the base section (50, 60), so that wing portions of the top section (40) extend beyond the sides of the base section (50, 60). The top section (40) may also have a pair of relief notches (140) defined therein with one relief notch (140) positioned generally above each side of the base section (50, 60). The mattress (20) cooperates with one or more expansion members (30) that are sized so that when placed at the side of the base section (50, 60) and below the wing portion of the top section (40) the sleeping surface of the mattress (20) will be substantially flat and substantially seam and crease free.
A patient support is provided comprising a frame including a deck support and a step deck positioned on the deck support. The step deck has an upper deck, a lower deck, and a side wall, the upper deck being spaced apart from the lower deck to define a recess of the deck. The step deck includes a first section and a second section configured to articulate relative to the first section.

A mattress section and a mattress section support are supported by the step deck.
A mattress assembly for supporting a patient includes a body support portion having a head end, a foot end, and a knee support portion. The body support portion has a first air zone extending from the head end to the knee support portion and a second air zone extending from the knee support portion to the foot end. The mattress assembly also includes a control module configured to supply air to the first and second air zones to maintain the first air zone at a substantially constant first pressure and to maintain the second air zone at a substantially constant second pressure. The second pressure is less than the first pressure to provide reduced pressure on a patient's calves and feet located on the second air zone.
