An arch support device has a lower layer of a rigid or semirigid material shaped to conform to the arch of a wearer's foot and to provide an arch supporting function when inserted in a shoe, a second layer of cushioning material such as foam secured to the upper face of the lower layer; and a third, cover layer of pliable material secured over the second layer. The foam layer is of variable thickness, with a maximum thickness in a heel region and a minimum thickness in a toe region.
The invention provides shoes for the elderly and disabled that are easy to put on and remove, that fit comfortably, and that are fashionable. This invention is a shoe with a slide fastener that zips open horizontally along the edge of the upper, with the upper being detachable along the edge of the outsole from the outside of the ankle to the base of the big toe, and with a slide fastener that is attached horizontally along the edges of the upper and the outsole from the base of the big toe to the outside of the ankle. Fastening tapes A and C (hook strips) are attached at the pull-tab of the slide fastener and the edge of upper, respectively, and second fastening tape (loop strip) is attached at the quarter in line with the other hook strips. A composite of polychloroprene rubber foam glued together with synthetic fabric is used as material for the upper. An ornamental design made of the same material as the upper, but in different color and texture, is attached to the upper. The shoe uses a slide fastener with a water-resistance of 0.01 kgf/cm.sup.2 or more.
A footwear orthotic is disclosed having a plurality of removable inserts. The removable inserts are preferably provided in the metatarsal region and/or in the heel region. The inserts are designed to gradually train the user's feet to become comfortably accustomed to orthotic support. Each insert preferably has a different profile than the others. The user can select the insert with the most appropriate profile and securely position the insert in the footwear orthotic for use.
An orthotic footplate including at least two superimposed, discrete structural layers having different lengths that extend along at least a segment of a length of the footplate. The footplate defines regions with different thicknesses and stiffness.
