The present invention relates to the transferring of information on the Internet, comprising: means (40) for storing information, corresponding to information provided at an Internet content provider (60), at respective alternative addresses of said storing means; means (20) for intercepting an information request from an Internet user directed to an Internet content provider; means for determining whether or not the intercepted request is directed to an information content provider having an associated alternative address on said storing means (40); and means for directing the request to said alternative address if such an alternative address exists.
The present invention is directed to a client-server network system implementing a multi-tier caching strategy for a user to access a document efficiently. The system comprises a client cache assistant serving as proxy for web browsers, a remote cache server managing user-requested documents and a search engine repository storing a huge number of documents as a backup for the remote cache server. Upon receipt of a document request, the client cache assistant examines its client cache to identify the requested document. If not successful, the remote cache server then identifies a copy of the requested document in its own cache and transmits a content difference between the two copies to the client cache assistant. If the server copy is still not fresh or not found, the remote cache server seeks another copy of the requested document from the search engine repository and transmits another content difference to the client cache assistant. The client cache assistant merges the content differences and the original copy into a new copy of the requested document.
An apparatus and method for enhancing the infrastructure of a network such as the Internet is disclosed. Multiple edge servers and edge caches are provided at the edge of the network so as to cover and monitor all points of presence. The edge servers selectively intercept domain name translation requests generated by downstream clients, coupled to the monitored points of presence, to subscribing Web servers and provide translations which either enhance content delivery services or redirect the requesting client to the edge cache to make its content requests. Further, network traffic monitoring is provided in order to detect malicious or otherwise unauthorized data transmissions.
A computer networking system, method and device are provided for use in secure networking transactions. The method may include pre-establishing a secure server-side connection between the secure networking device and a server. The method may also include receiving requests at the secure networking device from the plurality of clients via plural client-side connections between the networking device and each of the clients. The method may further include sending the requests from the plurality of clients over the pre-established secure server-side connection. SSL may be used to provide security for the server-side and/or client-side connections.
Upon receipt of a document request, a client assistant examines its cache for the document. If not successful, a server searches for the requested document in its cache. If the server copy is still not fresh or not found, the server seeks the document from its host. If the host cannot provide the copy, the server seeks it from a document repository. Certain documents are identified from the document repository as being fresh or stable. Information about each these identified documents is transmitted to the server which inserts entries into an index if the index does not already contain an entry for the document. If and when this particular document is requested, the document will not be present in the server, however the server will contain an entry directing the server to obtain the document from the document repository rather than the document's web host.
